My transmission won't work after a computer check up.

:exp:My 1999 explorer xlt has a transmission problem, driving it and it won't shift in 2nd gear. Sometime the OD light flashes, decided to have a computer check up ran. The read out showed a few minor things, codes cleared. Then discovered the engine wouldn't start, got it to start then found out the transmission is dead. Can a computer check up cause this. Having the car towed to my house. Before we look into replacing the transmission has anyone has had this to happen to their car.

Did you have trans problem before or after you had codes read? What codes did it pull?

the codes showed gears 2-3-5- miss alined nothing else was wrong, have been told it is possible to turn trasmission off during computer codes check up.

Welcome to this forum! What are the actual code numbers? Were the codes just cleared or did they flash the PCM (wiping out the program)?

who told you that?
reading codes cannot "turn off" the trans

if it only has second gear anf a flasking OD light, that points to a problem with SS1 & SS2 or their wiring

SS= Shift Solenoid

When SS1 and SS2 are "off" that is second gear
It uses a combination of SS1 and SS2 to make all of the 4 gears.
For instance
SS1 ON SS2 OFF is first
SS1 OFF SS2 OFF is second <--I know this for sure
SS1 OFF SS2 ON is third
SS1 ON SS2 ON is 4th

1st 3rd and 4th solenoids I quoted may be not exactly correct
but FOR SURE.. both 1 and 2 OFF are second gear.

you either have a bad trans wiring harness.. or a shorted out solenoid pack.

did they flash the PCM (wiping out the program)?

that is a possibility if "some budding t00ner" flashed a manual trans PCM code to an Automatic PCM..that's "bad mojo" there.
