i have a 91 explore eddie bauer. with a 150,000+. my question is that my ford will start fine, engine runs smooth, and will rev fine. the minute i put it in gear it's like if it had an old choke ,it would be closed when it should be open. it'll buck and sputter then rev then sputter. and if i just leaveoff the gas it'll keep an idle. but forget about going anywhere. a friend told me it might be the trottle pos. sencor. so i replaced it. no good. he also told me it might be the fuel injectors. i really don't have the money to buy all of them . is there a simple test i could do . i also haven't checked the fuel pressure yet. what would be normal for the 4.0 . any help would be great thanks.

Next time you fill up add a bottle or two of fuel injector cleaner. I doubt you need to replace them so just clean them. Check your plugs too.

PS, your name ROCKS.

Could be the fuel pressure regulator. Also, check for vacuum leaks. Make sure none of the caps came of the "octopus" where all the lines connect to, and make sure none of the lines are cracked.

thanks for the advice guys. is there any way to check the fuel preesure reg. before buying a new one? i have a good used one (that i got off an junkyard bound explorer, but i know the engine ran good) i'll have to try it . also what should the fuel pressure be . i 'm going to autozone this weekend to buy a pressure guage becuase i think the pump might be weak. it was very loud when i got the truck over a year and a half ago and i replaced the fuel filter and it quited it a little. do you think the pump could go weak? thanks again

try cleaning your MAF sensor, I think the pressure should be around 35-45 psi,
and as for the pumps, either they work or they don't. Your problem does sound like the regulator though. check for fuel coming out of the vacum line niple on the regulator. This will often but not always happen when the regulator is shot

thanks agian guys, i cleaned the maf sensor and it still didn,t help . but i have another problom . i was going to replace the regulator but the one i have is a screw on type and the one thats on it is some sort of plastic fitting thing at the fuel line . is there a special tool to take it off. it doesn't look like the reg fuel compression fittings but i could be wrong . anybody know how to take them off before i break it out of anger.lol.

Yah theres a special tool. The dealer or a parts store should have one. Its the same tool you need for the fuel filter too

Fuel pumps either work or they don't work??? what if the pump can't put out enough pressure? what if the pump can put out enough pressure but not enough volume? I see these problems on a regular basis. Maybe your maf is just shot, what kind of voltage is it putting out?

how do i check the voltage? i have a volt meter.do i turn the ing. key on or does the engine have to run ? i think it may be the reg .though becouse it won't hold the pressure if i don't drive the car for about a hour or so.i never bothered with it becuaes all i had to do is just wait a sec then turn it over again i have to crank the engine then let the pump build up then crank and fire up. could that be the pump? thanks agin for any help( p.s. this site is great, i never thought i'd ever meet so many people who love explorers)
