Dear All,

Its that time of year when the family is off the USA; and this is the first year we have owned an Explorer in the UK :)

From a preventative maintenance standpoint, I was wondering what list of parts I should be looking at to bring back with me while out in the USA? I have spoken to Howard and have a couple of items on my shopping list already; but I was wondering what are the sorts of things that others have felt useful to have, that can be had for cents in the USA but cost stupid money in the UK?

Our Ex. will be undergoing a slightly early MOT on 22/07 - I don't expect it to fail, but if it does, my shopping list will start with those items ;) But in the meantime, are there any parts (large or small) that people feel it would be helpful to have? I would be willing to take requests for parts if that helps, especially if they are small and inexpensive, but not readily available in the UK.

So, over to you guys...what do you suggest/recommend?

Some things that wouldn't hurt to have on the shelf

A couple of 00m12 kits YL2Z-9E473-AA
Main chain tensioner YL2Z6L266AA
Set of HT leads (Motorcraft OE) XU2Z12259EA
Set of autolite or motorcraft plugs
Rear hydraulic tensioner XU3Z6K254BA / 7U3Z-6K254-A
Water pump F7TZ-8501AB
Timing cover gasket set
IAC valve
Tranny filter
resistor pack for the heater fan
Headlight switch (the bulb blows and isn't replacable)
Lifted rear shackles
That'd be some useful just in case and service items but you could get carried away with tranny/valve body service kits and solenoids, suspension parts, timing chain parts (the ford cassettes are about £50 cheaper there), brake upgrade parts, caliper rebuild kits.... The list goes on as, like you said they are all so much cheaper over there. When i rebuilt my second engine i got the cassette and 00m12 kit and gaskets from tasca in the US and even with shipping it worked out far cheaper than here.

hi are fed ex or ups doing hoilidays now:D i think your baggage alowance will dictate what you will be able to bring back . i go to the states a couple of times a year and look at all the great prices but then have to see what i can get in my case. so its lots of light parts .and then theres customs remember your duty free alowence is not that large.dont want to arrive back with lots of cheap parts then have to pay uk duty on them. i speak from experiance:mad: so good luck and have a nice holiday. just some things to put on your list serpentine bealt and tentioner not to heavey and expensive overhere

Fair point on the luggage allowance and HMRC taxes - for me the luggage allowance isn't an issue as we're not travelling Economy and there are 4 fee paying passengers (plus an infant) who get 3 x 30KG allowance each ;) As for HMRC, well thats only on 'new' items - mine will be suitably scratched and marked and classified as 'used' and hence no VAT should be payable.

Those concerns aside, I think the biggest item I might bring back will be the upper control arms - eveyrthing else is likely to be much smaller (lower ball joints, spark plug leads, various bushings, intenral door handles, brake shoe kit etc.) :)

But I'm open to other items that I might not have thought of...like caliper bleed nipples.

Some parts to think about

Calliper rebuild kits
Calliper slide bolts
LSD clutch kits
Oil filters
Air filters
Fuel filters
Anti roll bar drop links and rear anti roll bar bushes
Handbrake spring kits
Brake pad spring kits
Bleed nipples
Rubber sleave for lower steering shaft uj

Hey All,

We've had a couple of days in Houston catching up on mail (post) and shopping and family and friends...Ooh and steak ;) But now its back to the proper job of the Ex.

I have visited RockAuto and so far come up with the following list of items. Can folks please take a look and let me know if the parts I have selected are correct for my Ex. (i.e. if the bits listed will actually fit :P ).

For example, one item I am not clear on is the belt and tensioner - I think I have selected the correct tensioner but not sure what size belt I need? Same for the suspension arms...have I got the correct ones? And finally, why can't I find the rear anti-roll bar bushings? :(

I wish I could bring my Ex. with me, get it serviced and shipped back - it'd be SO much easier. In the meantime, an Eddie Bauer Expedition (V8 of course) will have to do ;)

Any help greatly appreciated!

YES, I do wonder what we will do for body parts soon, my rear bumper,(northface)
is rusting badly around the lower reflecters- to repair its a take apart, cut the rust out and fabricate material, spot weld, bang it in and filll, sand etc.
I would much prefer a new bumper and have it painted- anyone got any ideas on getting that part please?
Also- I need both temp sensors located near thermostate- one is down and so I am reading cold all the time- cant be assed to play with one at a time as its an inlet manifold off job really- so will do both just for good measure-
Thanks guys.

Well I've ordered the majority of the goodies required from RockAuto - just need to pack it all when it arrives ;) But I've also been idly browsing and came across the following item:

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=990010

...any ideas if it would be compatible with our UK filling nozzles - looks nifty IMHO!

Also...if any Members would like any particular parts while I'm out here in the USA, please post up and I'll do my best :)

Looks mighty handy for a syphon tube :D. I'll stick to a lock thanks. It's getting to the point that the tank of fuel is worth more than the vehicle.

I've had a good look at these and they only release when the nozzle is put into the chamber. As for security, I doubt they are any more/less secure than a locking cap :P

Anyone know from the given specs. if they would work with our UK pumps?
