1994 XLT
Hello ther everyone,
I'm new here, I have a 1994 XLT 4WD. It stopped running about 4 years ago, I was driving and it just quit. I looked under the vehicle and saw there was no oil drain plug, yikes! So, I left it to sit (after making sure it still cranked over 1st), the very next day I put a fresh plug and oil in it. It ran fine for 300 miles and quit again. So, it has set waiting for me to install this junkyard engine I bought with 56k on it, supposedly. It doesn't have an EGR, how do I fix this? Do I have to use my old head/intake, etc...? I'm not a real mechanic, I 'm gonna change all the fluids, plugs, etc. Then take it to the shop for the swap, I don't have a puller nor an A/C R-12 recovery machine, as the freon goes thru the block at some point according to the book. If anyone has any advice, let me know. It could be the battery died for all I know, I never tried it a third time, it wouldn't even turn over. Recently I tried to charge up the battery to no avail. It's dead though and I wonder if the $1500 the shop wants to charge is unreasonable? I spent $2500 to get the tranny rebuilt just before the engine went. Please if you can help me, great, if not, I'll look up past messages to check on remedies. Peace, Yuba49r

Welcome! 4 years ago?

1500 is an ok price also if they are going to put in a new motor dont bother changing fluids they will do it to the new motor and also the ac does not run through the engine

Thanks for the info.

Hello there guys,
Thanks for the comments, atleast I know someone is reading this. I've been trying to get the funding to put this truck back together for awhile, it only has 115k miles on it, so I think it will be worth my time and money, within reason. I know it also needs to have new bearing in both front hubs, and new 4wd automatic hub (don't know what it is called) aluminum thingys. Also, it may need a new power steering pump, it looks like it was leaking, although I don't recall having to add any more frequently than any other fluids, or excessive leakage, like my wife's poor Lumina Sdn. that was gonna cost up to $1700 to replace 2 power steering hoses! What a piece of s--t! Oh well, I'm just gonna retire it to the State's Consumer Assistance Program (California), for the $1000, use that money to help fix the Explorer or atleast get them started on it. Sorry, if I'm wrong about the A/C, but the stupid Chilton's manual said that the 94's freon routed through the engine head/block, so it has to be evacuated before removing the engine, which is why I'm scared of damaging it, if I were to attempt to swap the motor myself, the last one I did was a chevy 350, the time before that was a slant 6 225 in a 69 Valiant. Not much electronics to them, even fewer sensors/wires, connectors, etc.. to get lost/misplaced or put back wrong. I think I would be way over my head, even with my training as an electrician. Those car electronics are specialized and can be intricate, don't know all the procedures, if I unplug this before that what happens, etc... I think the $1548 plus tax will give me peace of mind and save me some headaches, no doubt. I spent $2500 on the transmission less than 10k miles before the engine trouble, may be someone has a guess as to whether the sensor made the engine shut down? Like those Hondas that shut the motor down when oil level is too low, or the bearings get too hot, etc? I just changed the bearings and axles on my Subby GL Wagon 4wd, how much harder is to change them on the Explorer, anyone have an opinion? Let me know, I may get those done at the same time they're in the motor, are there better brands to use? I want to go do some serious 4wheeling in these hills looking for access to Gold Prospecting sites, off of difficult logging skids/roads. Some have more than 60percent grades, I know of one that is about 70%, ouch, I get worried in the Subby on that one. The snow has kept me from that one recently, I bottomed out the Sub figuring that one out, good thing I had a shovel. If there's anyone who can help me, I live in Nevada County, Grass Valley, California, near Hwy 49 & Limekiln Rd. Peace, Yuba49r (David)

Still needing advice...

Hello there again,
Hope all is well with everyone today. I'm still here waiting for some advice on how to fix this truck. I need to figureout how to convvert a non-egr motor to a egr motor. Do I just swap the heads out? Intake? I have a 1994 XLT, dead engine. I bought an engine from a salvage yard, supposedly it only had 56k miles on it. It came without an egr, I live in California. I have the old engine still in vehicle with egr equipment installed. Please help me out! I'm also needing to fix bearings and 4wd hubs on front, any good parts co. let me know. I don't want them breaking again. Thanks, Yuba49r

What year are you getting the motor from? '91 to '94 use the exact same long block. As long as you are using one of those as the donor, it should be as simple as removing whatever doesn't fit right on the new long block and moving the corresponding part from the existing long block to the new long block.

Donor engine

Hey there,
Thanks for the replies. I bought this donor engine from mid-west auto salvage. They guarantee it to fit my truck, I just didn't remember (and was highly medicated at the time) whether the truck had an EGR, so I said I didn't know. The block came out of a 1991 Ranger that had been rear-ended (I was told), it had 56k miles, they installed what appear to be new heads/gaskets/intake, they even have the fuel rails and stuff, just no EGR. I think it has the oil pan too. Anyway, I was gonna get it installed in my 1994 Explorer. But, if I need to worry about cams and which one goes with what year block/heads, I'll save this motor for a Willy's or equal that needs a motor or maybe a Scout that doesn't need smog or EGR. If you have any more thoughts, I'm open to suggestions. Peace, Yuba49r

if this came out of a 91 ranger you'd better double check too see if this is really a 4.0 V6 and not a smaller V6 like a 3.0 or lower...if I'm not mistaken did the ranger 4.0 ohv not come until 93' whats the word?

Yuba49r, sorry about bad luck bro, How much did you pay for this motor or did you buy just the block and the heads thats prob. what might of happend

Kyle0614, that is a negative,,
that 4.0 OHV has been out since 89 90 88? something like that even for the "Rangers"

sorry bout the bad luck bout the explorer

Engine Price.

Hello all,
To answer your question, I'm not sure what type of vehicle it came out of.I do remember it wasn't out of an Explorer though. When I bought this motor it was 2004 prices. I only paid $550 + $100 for shipping, it came strapped to a pallet complete & ready to go in with a few parts from my original engine, mainly alternator/ steering pump, etc...Has what looks like brand new heads/gaskets, intake, Throtttle body and fuel rails. Not sure what else may be includd, I'll see when I get into it, I guess. As long as I don't have to worry about which tranny the donor motor was matched up with as to which heads/cam/pistons etc...and I can swap EGR parts from my motor. May be it came out of a Bronco II? I still can't remember, I do still have the paperwork that came with the motor, shows the operating test before they shipped it. There is a weird residue in the spark plug holes, kinda dark colored sandy stuff, maybe it's to protect the engine? Anyone know? Hope this works for me. Peace, Yuba49r
