1999 Ford Explorer Sport
So, I recently was gifted a 1999 Explorer Sport (4.0l 6-cyl, 4x4). It has a number of small issues which I have been repairing and ticking off the list, but this one has me a bit stumped...

This forlorn hard plastic tube appears to have broken off something, but I can't find where. And I can't seem to find a good enough reference anywhere to sort it out.

Any help identifying this lonely piece of plastic would be greatly appreciated.

Additional info: I can't find a broken end anywhere else. I suspect is is part of the EGR system and the engine is throwing a code P0455 indicating a leak, so I'm guessing that's the culprit. I just can't decipher where it should be going.

Thanks!

The intake looks like the one on a SOHC, is that correct or is it the OHV engine?

Where does the other end of that tube go? When the engine is running is there vacuum on it?

That goes to the evap valve which is mounted under the battery. There is probably a small hose hanging off of it where it broke.

To avoid having to replace the entire plastic line, go to the auto parts store and get yourself a suitably sized short length of rubber vacuum hose (they sell it by the foot, but my AutoZone keeps a box with scraps and they'll give you a piece that's a few inches long for free, but even if you have to buy a foot it's cheap). I think boomin is probably correct about where the other end is.

Thanks

Thanks both of you. The other end of the line was just peeking out from under the battery box. Likely the battery at one time dripped onto the line and corroded it. Looks like a project for Memorial Day weekend.

Thanks for the help!

Wow, I was my "projects" were that easy to fix...:)

Well, if battery acid is leaking onto parts there may be more that needs done eventually, and a battery tray in bad shape... and it's not fixed yet. Was it this forum or some other vehicle forum I'm thinking of where people have had a pollution control canister under the battery, eaten up by leaking acid?

I believe that line carries vacuum, so once you reconnect it you'll see an improvement in your idle.
