I just bought a 94 eddie bauer explorer with 160k for $500. It runs a bit loud under the hood and eats gas like crazy. While a friend and I searched for vacuum leaks and bad gaskets we found a leak in this pipe.
I dont know whats its called and id like to replace it.
Its on the drivers side of the motor and close to the exhaust manifold as you can see. I circled the hole.
Any help would be awesome.

that makes sense

now i imagine thats not the reason i used close to a 1/3 tank of gas in 40 miles

That is the EGR.

It goes from the collector on the DS exhaust manifold to the EGR valve on the intake.

A clogged EGR can cause poor fuel economy. But I don't think it will be THAT bad.

I'd look at your Fuel Pressure Regulator. It's a common fail point on a lot of EFI vehicles.

I would say the EGR will cause such poor fuel economy, as that will cause a fairly major vacuum leak, cause the FPR to not function properly, as well as throwing all the engine sensors, especially the MAF out of whack. With all that combined, it could cause problems.

For a quick fix, disconnect the EGR solenoid so at least the EGR valve doesn't open. To do this, find the EGR valve, it would be on the end of said tube attached to the intake manifold. There is a small vacuum line connected to it, follow it back to a small black device with a round top. Disconnect the electrical connection from this device and the EGR valve won't open. That will at least let the rest of the motor function fairly normally if you have to drive it until you get it fixed.

But, that tube NEEDS to be replaced. If you have access to a welder you could possible weld up the hole. You could also try and take it to an exhaust shop to see if they can fix it. If not, you can get a new one. This is where I got mine:

It could also likely be obtained from the ford dealer, although they are expensive.

Thanks a bunch guys. Ill be heading to the junk yard this weekend and im going to see if i can dig one up there. For now ill disconnect the solenoid.
