Hi Folks...

Decided I should pop the truck into 4x4 modes before the winter lands and check it functions OK, haven't needed it since last years snow. In both High and Low modes all is well until I make a turn, I'm getting a kind of groan come from the front end - very metallic and resonating, makes my toes curl and hurts my teeth ;-). Steering feels stiff but then that just might be the front wheels under power? Having said that the feeling is similar to a power steering pump on it's last legs - but there's no whine - which is associated with a pump going. (I've had two go on other cars - so know the drill). Any one got any thoughts??? It's a '99 NorthFace.

Much appreciated - Richard

if you were doing all this "testing" on fry pavement then that is where your graoning is comming from...dont do this....4x4 on dry pavement is bad and will break things you dont want to break.....this groaning is normal for using 4wd on pavement.

Never Ever Ever turn on 4X4 Low on the normal road you.... Ford UK dont tell you this I know.... most people here learn the hard way.... But never use it untill you are off the road.

Thanks for the heads up fellas...
Pavement was wet... but pavement all the same.
I used to have a perm 4x4 LandRover Defender, so that lived in high 4x4 all the time, hence my concerns at the noise on the X... now I know it's the norm - I'll leave it alone until I need it in the right place. Thanks again - much appreciated. Richard

As stated never ever drive on dry pavement in 4 low or 4 high. If you do want to test it find a gravel or dirt road and engage 4x4.
