How does one register to get navigation updates? I'm at A4 now, but I want to make sure I get whatever updates come down the road.

Longer term, you'll have to pay for navigation updates. A4 was part of a fix to the software.

Adding to what 182RG and cnsheets said, we generally release updated maps once a year. I can't speculate on timing for the next one, but it'll be available through NAVTEQ at Navigation.com.
