01 Sport trac
ok well i have purchased a 2001 ford explorer sport trac from my wifes mother for $500 dollars due to the timing chain failure .. I have recently removed the motor from the truck and followed a few steps from member 2000streetrod .
very detailed man .. but i have a few questions .. i tried to read as much as possible but starring at the screen for that long i will probably get a seizure .

I work for Autozone and with my discount i can get a timing set (part number 76137 ) for just around $275.00 .. but i was wondering if that is enough or would i need more parts. if so please inform me as what i may need .. yes i know streetrod has a parts list .
but i rather ask because i noticed most people just buy separate parts when they have this kit and i need a shopping list before going to work ordering stuff .

another thing is once the motor is out i decided to rebuild it since why not? its already out and i don't want to have to do this again for a very loooongg time ..
but my question is would i have to put the engine on TDC before removing the heads and chains to send the heads to the machine shop. or can i remove and then time it once i get everything back from the machine shop.

i will have more questions very soon since this the first time taking apart a motor ..

If you going to send the heads to a machine shop then wait till you get them back to put the engine on tdc and do the timing. You might want to drop your oil pan though upper and lower and check for any plastic guides pieces that could have fallen down in the lower motor or made their way into the oil pickup. Be a good time to check out your thermostat housing also while the motor is out they are known for leaking.

thank you for the reply .. that makes me feel a bit more confident about removing everything now and worrying about TDC later .. i have already purchased a new water pump but need a new timing chain cover as it looks like it was leaking .. the thermostat housing must be purchased as well since someway some how it got damaged when removing the engine.. but that's what happens when you get family members to help with no pay .. i will need all new gasket kit which autozone sells .. but what im still a bit lost about is the timing chain kit that autozone sells .. and if i would need anything else related to the timing chain .. if anyone is interested in this i will be adding pictures.

That timing kit looks complete to me, but one thing you will need is the timing tool set which I believe you can rent at some places. Yeah take pics keep us updated, $500 is a steal, wish I had that kinda luck.

2WD or 4WD?

That kit is complete if you have the engine with no balance shaft. Usually only the 4WD models have the balance shaft engine. Also, does your engine already have the oil gallery volume reducer (pencil)? I think it was installed prior to your model year but I'm not sure. If not, I suggest that you install one. You get a nice employee discount ($370 - $275)/$370 = 27%.

I would have removed the spark plugs and checked for interference damage with a viewer before ordering any parts. The SOHC V6 is expensive to rebuild compared to the cost of an engine from a salvage yard.

I'm not aware of any discount auto parts store that rents the OTC 6488 timing tool kit.

I agree with 2000 streetrod check for valve to piston damage it the timing chain broke it is an interference engine if your having the heads rebuilt your probably ok you can look in the plug hole with a scope and see where the valve hit the piston on that bank if it were the head chain if it was the lower chain than all six. usually the piston survives.

I had a bit of time today to remove the heads before the rain. there is no valve or piston damage . need to find a camera to show you guys the process. i did manage to purchase the otc 6488 tool kit from a guy on craigslist . cost me $120 and it was brand new .. now that the heads are off im quoting alot of places but noticed that no one does blocks just heads . is there a reason why?

Maybe not a full service machine shop. They are getting fewer and fewer. Good deal on the tool though I would have bought it. Glad to hear the valves etc are ok. If you need specs or anything let me know I can look them up for you.

well honestly i don't know anything about this motor or this kind of mechanics.. it is the first time i ever pull a motor and disassemble it. this is basically learn as i go time of thing.. the only thing i had before this was 2000streetrod's thread and a spanish video on youtube about this specific motor.. if there is anything out there i can read or maybe you guys can tell me as i go would be great .. just like i have no idea what that oil gallery pencilthingamajig is. and if it comes in the kit or should i need other things..

Well you chose a complicated engine to be your first one. I will get the timing chain procedure for you just not sure if it should be posted somewhere particular or sent to you personally. I am new to this forum so not sure what the proper procedure would be for this anyone?

engine assembly instructions

If you PM me your email address I'll send you the SOHC V6 assembly instructions. They have lots of drawings show how to use the 6488 kit tools. They also include torque values and places where sealant should be applied. I timed my camshafts without the kit but bought one on ebay ($150 & used only once) for next time.

That's pretty cheap for my area usually 300 350 for both without any parts. I would use a reputable place. I have seen some pretty shabby work in my time.

torque with lever arm

I don't speak Spanish but in the video I think the specified torque for the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt when using the lever arm was given as 62 lb-ft. It should be 63 lb-ft when not using the lever (6485 socket extension) and 45 lb-ft when using the lever. 62 lb-ft with the lever is equivalent to 88 lb-ft.

ok ran into a little problem today.. i was removing the flywheel bolts and managed to break off the heads on 4 of the bolts.. i was thinking of buying a bolt extractor from the auto parts store but was told that that wouldnt work .. a guy gave me a number of his friend which said my only option was to weld a nut to the top of it and then extract it that way.. he priced that at $80 dollars.. which is out of my budget since i still have parts to buy .. does anyone else have any other way of trying to remove those bolts? i also rented a harmonic balancer puller and to my surprise didnt work .. is there anyway of removing it without a puller or what should i do?

this project has kicked my butt so far.. but i dont plan to give up yet

flexplate bolts

Were you able to separate the flexplate from the crankshaft?
ChanBlnc.jpg

There is a spacer between the flexplate and the crankshaft.
FlexPlat.jpg

The thickness of the flexplate and the spacer requires the bolts to be fairly long. Once the flexplate is removed the bolts will no longer be in tension. If there is enough left to grasp with an adjustable locking plier then soak the bolt shafts with P B Blaster or equivalent for a few hours to make extraction easier.

The balancer can be removed with a standard puller but a shaft or bolt with a diameter smaller than the threaded bore of the crankshaft must be inserted so the main bolt of the puller is putting pressure against the crankshaft instead of the balancer. Otherwise the small puller bolts will break: Remove harmonic balancer

i was able to remove the balancer with a 2/3 jaw 5 ton puller but the flex plate is where iam having problems .. i was able to removing 4 of those star bolts but the other 4 are still in place .. most of the heads on them are still be gripped with locking pliers.. i will see tomorrow if i purchase some pb blaster and try that method. i will try and find my wifes camera so i can take some pictures of my progress .. i sure hope that i can remove those bolts without having to pay someone $80.00 . fingers crossed

those are inverted torq bit sockets you should be able to get those at your store no?
