I am looking at Explorers and I am torn between a 1999 XLT OHV with an auto transmission and 4 doors, or a 2000 Sport with a manual. Everything in my price range needs some work, as I am broke but need wheels. The 4 door has 212k miles and needs front wheel bearings. The Sport is 170k miles and clean up top, but has surface rust on most of the undercarriage. They both run strong and shift like they should.
Which would you choose?
This will be my first Explorer. (I guess I joined the forum a little early)

What engine is in the SPORT?

If it's an OHV - that has my vote as it's very, very reliable.

Also, the SPORT has a manual trans. Rowing gears is always a pleasure ;-)

I'd say sport, rust sucks but that's not money needed right now to fix. Plus it's less miles and a stick shift is more reliable (just expect a much lower tow rating in the sport, as manuals and shorter bodies = lower tow rating) but the sport will be quicker and get better gas mileage. What engine is the sport? If its the SOHC i would say to get the 4 door, otherwise get the sport.

Then my vote is for the SPORT.

If anything - when both are properly tuned - you will get better gas mileage out of the SPORT due to less weight and the 5 speed.

Are they both 4wd OR?

Lots of 2000 and 2001 SPORTS are 2wd.

Regardless, I am biased to SPORT's ;-)
