First, it's K&N, not K&D. 2nd, while just a K&N stock style replacement filter might help a tiny bit, a a complete Cold Air Intake would be much better.

There's a pretty good basic formula to follow here. You didn't say what motor you have. It's 1 of 3: 5.0L-V8, 4.0L-V6 OHV (8th digit of the VIN is "X"), or a 4.0L-V6-SOHC (8th digit is "E")
What you should do is the following:
1.) Cold Air Intake
2.) Programmer/Flash Tuner (SCT Xcal3)
3.)Cat-back Exhaust
4.) Underdrive Crank Pulley (If you have either if the V6's, as there is no pulley available or the V8, from what I've heard)
5.) If you're feeling ambitious, swap in an electric fan for the stock mechanical radiator fan.

Call James at Henson Performance. He'll help you out with all of this.

What's your tire size, and axle gear ratio?

I should have said I've got a 5.0 V-8 tire size is P255/65R16 1065 don't know gear ratio ( how do I find it? ) It's also an E B 1999 awd, I'm not towing much about 6500 with an equilizer hitch without sway control. I just think that 8 mpg is a little hard on the wallet. Thanks again......lost

There isn't going to be a magic fix for more MPG. Make sure the vehicle is running properly. Clean air filter, no check engine light codes. Change fluids. Change spark plugs, wires. Normal tune up stuff.

Don't be in a hurry going uphill... and stay off the O/D switch... 3,200-3500 rpms.

Sounds par for the course. Tire pressure and tire capacity/ratings help too!

1997 5.0 AWD + 235/75/15 + Equal-i-zer hitch + brake controller + 6,000 trailer = 10 mpg.
