Well, my ex has let me down. While visiting my wife’s family in Southern Georgia for Easter my tranny died. My brother-in-law used his diagnostic tool on the ex and came up with a code indicating it was the solenoid block. I got a replacement but when he pulled the pan to install it he found a large piece of metal in the pan. It was about 2 1/2” to 3” long and 3/4” to 1” wide. Not having anyone to rebuild the tranny I am looking for a good rebuilt one as a replacement.

Do any of you fine folks out there know of a reliable source in the Georgia, North Florida, Western South Carolina area that would have a good quality 5R55S for me? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I have always told myself that when the tranny goes so does the ford. The Explorer is keeping me to this statement, by breaking every other component other than the transmission.

Looked at a replacement a while ago just for ***** and giggles. Was surprised how inexpensive you can get a rebuilt one. $1500 to 2800 + core.

Always had good luck with rockauto. Their customer service is decent too.

Good luck.

FWIW a complete rebuild with upgraded solenoid pacs, turnkey drive in drive out 2 year warranty here in Northern CA was $2,600. Try that with a newer FWD/AWD wondermobile.

Follow up...Having the Transmission replaced again (luckily under warranty)! After 5,040 miles I had to take it to a shop near me (the shop that installed it is over 200 miles from where I live). It was slipping to the point I didn't trust it on the approx. 9.5 mile drive to and from work, much less any further. The shop verified that the tranny was bad and the company I bought it from immediately sent a new unit along with the fluid to fill it (I had purchased their fluid with the initial unit).. The shop is working on getting the new unit installed now. I'll post more on this after I get it back from the shop.
