First no not my st, i still love this truck. I want to trade my extra car for an 88 yj that is extremely modded. It has everything I would end up wanting to put in it but i'm afraid to buy someone elses project. Also I have been trying to sale my car for a while with no luck and he is interested in trading so it might be a good opportunity. Heres links to the jeep and my car tell me if you think it would be a good idea or if i should start with a stock jeep.

Yes...hell yes!

Do not start with a stock Jeep unless you really want to see money start disappearing quickly. That sucker is done.

I wouldn't throw any cash his way, though. His price seems a little high. This appears like a pretty even swap.

Sorry but I wouldn't even think about trading for that. One, it's someone else's offroad rig that has been used and abused, no passenger room, no cargo room. What happens in the winter or in the rain?? Not exactly street friendly or a DD. You don't know if there's any issues with it, it's an '88. Your Trac is KBB at around $15-16k and his price is about $7-8k too high for his rig. Maybe if it was just built with all top of the line parts it might be worth around $8-9k but it's abused. I'd keep the Trac and build it up or if you want a trail worthy rig that is extremely well taken care of then buy Chad's SAS'd Trac from him, even though I want it more... I'd pass on the Jeep, JMHO.

He's got more than $11k in it but when you build a rig you never get out of it what you put into it. If that's what you want, fine, but I agree I don't think it's worth more than $8k.

Sounds like he's looking to trade the RX-7, not the Sport Trac.

Yeah, I would have never suggested trading the Trac for it. As I read it, he's talking about trading the RX7. I don't think this is a daily driver anyway and he'd be trading one toy for another. Besides that, winter and rain are probably hardly any kind of consideration in SoCal.

if you want to make that trade, i wouldnt throw any money into the mix. it seems pretty even, and although he has spent a ton of money on his rig, that doesnt mean thats how much the thing is worth. its probably been beat to hell on top of that. if i were you i would keep your mazda, that way you have a trail rig (your trac) and then something you can zip around town in and get decent mpg. unless that rotary engine is causing you grief which they are pretty well known for, i would just keep it. i am one of those people that love jeeps too, we have a sport trac and a jeep JK, so i understand the want for one, im not gonna lie, i think they are pretty cool. just make sure you dont throw any money into the trade. it seems like he wants a DD more than you need another trail rig.

Ok, looked over the RX7 a little more. That is sweet. I'd think hard about this trade. Jeeps are a dime a dozen and often overpriced. You won't find another RX7 like you have very easily.

My bad, thought you were thinking of trading the Trac for the Jeep. Sleep deprivation from work and a 6 month old cutting teeth makes it hard to see things clearly, especially on a small iphone screen.

Personally I'd think about it longer. I just went thru this last year with my Show Truck and ended up selling it for next to nothing. I regret it everytime I see pictures of it and will really regret it next month when the show season starts back up again. The truck had over $28k into it and was signed by "Chip Foose". Everything (drivtrain wise and exhaust) had been completely rebuilt with all new parts right before it was sold.

This picture doesn't do it justice, old phone camera picture...

Hmmmm.. I'm diffinately going to be thinking long and hard about this trade. It would be a straight trade, I was actually thinking about asking for some money from him. My car runs perfect and believe it or not it was my dd until i got the trac. The jeep is green stickered and is not street legal. If I add fenders to cover the tires i think i'll be able to get it on the street. Getting it smogged wont be a problem ;) so i'm not too worried about it not being street legal but it is still something i'm keeping in mind. Also it has a 4.0 fuel injected swap with 40k on it. If he doesn't have reciepts to prove the engine details i wont be buying it.

I just feel like i'm trading a clean, like new condition car for an old pos. I mean I have no way off knowing the crazy trails that rig has gone down. Just my seats alone cost me $3500. I just dont see 35-40k in this jeep like there is in my car but i'm not a jeep expert. Does anyone have a ball park on how much you think is in to this jeep?

Btw sweet truck mr07. sonoma or s10? I have always told myself I would have a mini truck on bags then when I got the trac I got the offroad bug. When I was little and my parents and I would go to the grocery store I would always go pick up the latest mini truck magazines to keep me entertained while shopping.

I'd keep the RX-7. You'l have to get a trailer for now to drag that Jeep to the trails and would need a bigger truck to tow it. Too much weight for the Trac between the trailer and Jeep. I towed my show truck but with a little uhaul trailer and my GMC was lite with a 2.5 IronDuke built for drifting. Found out that all the towing I do played havoc on the clutch packs and spiders. Not to mention the added strain and wear on the transmission.

Probably a good chunk but you can get better trail/ street legal Jeeps for around $3-6k. With gas prices, etc. people are unloading these like crazy for dirt cheap.

I lol'd while reading all the replies... I guess ppl don't read the first 4-7 words of posts :p lol.

I'm agreeing with most everything rebel has said tho. Even for off roading you'll need something to haul that to the trails... something ur ST can't do. The jeep looks bad ass but it's just not a realistic option to trade for a wheeling machine and not be able to really go wheeling in it...

Take a better look. That thing has a lot of work done, and the sides are not all that banged up. ARB in the front, dana 60 rear, winch--

I'd make the trade.

I am going to see it in person tonight to help make a better decision. I know my trac can't tow it on a trailer but I thought about doing one of the pull behind deals like motorhomes do. The problem with that is if something breaks and it cant be towed on its own wheels then i will be stuck. Also those iroks will wear quick on the road.

Basically my dilema is my car is not street legal either even though I have been dd'ing it for 6 years with no problems. So my car is very hard to sell. Plus it is a rotary and like I have always said, you have to love a rotary to own a rotary. So I can only get a rotary lover to buy my car but all rx fans are broke and drive 1000 dollar rx7s.

(i'm finding myself at the point where i'm trying to figure out what went through my head dropping so much money on an almost unsale-able car. I guess I haven't learned as I am now sinking money into the trac)

I'm still searching for other jeeps. I have called 40+ people, no one else interested in trading unless it gets 35+ mpg. So its either this yj or wait patiently for my car to sale.

Vehicles are very rarely investments or can even come close to breaking even. I'm about even on my '69 Cougar right now and the engine build I have saved, printed, wiped drool off of, is $14k. I'd be in the profit range after that, but it's not a vehicle I'd be interested in selling. You really can't rationalize vehicle obsessions. I know that in the next year my ST won't be worth much above $5 or $6 no matter what I do to it but I still wouldn't hesitate to drop a new engine, transmission, (axles?) into it.

You'll just have to decide whether you would enjoy the Jeep more than the RX7 because the dollars will never really make cents (sic).

So i decided not to get the Jeep. I'm going to continue trying to sell my car and when it does I have a few options- mid or long travel for the trac and a dirt bike. a jeep. Or I can get a nice side by side like a rzr s. The old st should not have a problem towin' one of them around.

Thank you everyone for your responses. Everyone made some good points.

Good choice. Try posting it on Mautofied.com, lots of custom vehicles and buyers there.
