I have a 2000 Ex XLT. Auto with 4.0 SOHC. Just today while driving open flat road, it seemed to of slipped for just a second. Then ran normal. It has done once on 2 trips about 20 min long. The best i can describe the feeling is when I drive my mustang and take off from a stop light in the rain, as i cross the white intersection tape, it is slick and the car would loose traction for a split second and catch again. You would feel a little thud and spin. But in the Ex I am at full 60 to 70 mph on flat road in max gear.

First thing to do is check the fluid level, smell the ATF, is it burnt? Brown or black?

Ok I checked the ATF it is at a good level, still pink(not bright), not burnt but does have a little odor to it. Do you think the tranny just needs a filter and flushing?

Btw thanks for the help.

Wouldnt be a bad idea to change the fluid and filter. Yuo will also get to see the amount of metal located on the tranny pan magnet. When flushing, also replace the tranny pan gasket. Filter bolts don't need to be torqued.

Though, since IDK how many miles is on the Explorer, anything could be going wrong. Our suburban's tranny slipped a couple times in the past 4 years...still going strong at 170k original tranny hasnt been touched can be the same for you...
