Need an alternate amp

sounds like you just want something to knock hard. the only place the 9500 might give somethign up to the w7 is in sound quality.

if you get a mtx 9500 12 and do their spl ported box design and run it with a mtx 942 amp you'll come out cheaper than just buying the jl amp- and it will hit as hard if not harder than the jl set-up you were considering. It won't have half bad sq either.

oh yeah- don't get a cap, auxiliary batteries are cheaper and work way better unless you are considering at least a 15 farad cap and thats big $$

the traditional 1 farad caps effect on your charging system during a song is analogous to the effect of sprinting the first 100 yards of a mile long race- it just makes it work harder the rest of the time to try and catch up while overall providing no real benefit (just benefits you for the first 100 yards/couple of seconds)

Expo have you ever worked with anything from elemental designs? Are their 12a's gonna give me bass or are they more of just a SQ sub? I've seen them mentioned here quite alot but.....

Someone told me that any mono amp that is 2 ohm stable or lower will also be 3 ohm stable. Is this correct? If so why aren't they listed at 3 ohms?

the e12a will hit plenty hard, but it does lean more toward sq- that would be my choice if i had been shooting for a little more sound quality (but then i never would've got to build it so large and had so much fun)

yes any amp that is 2 ohm stable will be fine with 3 ohms- it will just have less power... which sucks

What do you mean less power? Do you mean if its rated at 1000 rms@ 2 ohms it will do 750rms at 3 ohms? Cause I'm ok with that.

yes it means it puts out less power- the power handling is still 1,000 watts though. i know one 13w7 and one 1501d mtx amp would make a nice combo...

aaahhhhhhhh screw the W7!!! I think I'm gonna go with the elemental designs E12a. I just like their style! I hope I'm not dissapointed. Anyone know why they don't sell the avionixx 800.2 at the edesignaudio.com website?

Well that was some reading...thanks to expo...figured I would throw in my two cents ...

the ED subs are real nice and the JL subs are nice also...personally I feel their amps are complete garbage and I don't feel I am risking a tongue lashing by expo for saying that. If I was you I would look around some more I mean you can wind up with someone a hell of a lot better for a far less price. I know I mention them a lot but Concept puts out some quality amps and if you want to spend a little under a G on a amp you will get 2400W @ 1ohm and you will be making whatever sub you get move a damn good amount. ED is good but if you want more thump i would deff go with RE...even though you never heard of them i can't influence that enough they are an amazing company that puts out high quality product....good SQ also and its not all in the sub remember that...box design is very VERY key...you should think of how much space you have before you decide on a sub because some subs are made for smaller spaces and vice versa....hope that helped and I hope i added some more questions to the pile...more questions = more answers...more answers = better evaluation of the situation.....

oh and is this for recreation or for a purpose that is also a very important question....

Well, I can tell you from experience that JL amps are not garbage. I have had a 500/1, RF BD1500 and now the JL 1000/1 running my single 12W7. My roof makes a waffling sound whenever the windows are down. That takes a lot of sound pressure. I realize JL products are expensive but you get what you pay for. I have had this sub in 3 different vehicles and pounded the crap out of in all three. It still sounds as good as the day I bought it. As far as amps, I tried a RF BD1500 and it didn't sound nearly as good as the 1000/1. At high volumes the sub would "flatten out" with the 1500. The JL sounds incredible no matter how loud I turn it up. For me, the cost is worth every penny. If you could see the looks on peoples faces when they hear my system you would realize it's priceless.

Well not to sound ****y but if you in deed did spend 1000 on that amp than i spend half or what you did and the normal person might spend 3/4 of what you did on a concept amp and get over twice the power out of it....let me rephrase myself...for the money...JL just doesn't perform...and especially for my purposes...constant 1000W rating through all ohms hurts what I like to do.....a lot.....

The main difference between a JL amp and most others is that the JL amps have a triple voltage rail system. They will put out a minimum of 1000 watts even at 12 volts. The output at 14+ volts is higher. They also have excellent crossover/eq features. I paid $850 for my amp. I'm not trying to say you can't get a good amp for less money, but anybody who says JL amps are garbage is wrong. They are expensive. If you have the money, which I did, they are worth it in my opinion. If you have a smaller budget there are definately better alternatives. No sense in waisting a large part of your budget on just the amp. It all comes down to how much you want to spend and getting the most bang for your buck.

Bang for you buck....i just don't see it with JL...what do you do with your system...is it just there to be there or do you compete in some fashion....???

And how many of your people that don't want to go broke are runnying a 16volt system? So yer getting 1000W out of it either way....

Most cars put out more than 12 volts(I'm thinking 13-14 volts). Bang for the buck only applies to systems on a budget. I have not competed with my '03 but I did compete with both my previous '01 Sport and my '02 Focus. I hit 143 in the X with 500 watts. I hit 146 in the Focus with 1000 watts. I have taken first place in every sound competition I have competed in(stock 1). Nobody was even close(139db was the closest). I have not used any dynomat or any other sound materials in any of these vehicles. If I were to take it seriously I'm sure I could get at least a couple more db.

Who exactly are "my people"? I really don't like that statement. As I already stated, the JL 1000/1 puts out more than 1000 watts. I have not bench tested it myself but the 1000 watt rating is a minimum not maximum.

it was a statement meaning people that don't want to go broke....nothing against u personally...:)

as for the whole competition area....again JL is just not effective...you do realize that some competition rings put you in power classes according to 4ohm rating...now that would put you in a 600+ class and still only pushing 1000W where as i would be in the 501-600 class and pushing 2400W...its just not effective...

most cars hover at about 12.3 - 13 volts....depending on your electrical system...and how much of a jump in power are you talking from extra voltage for that amp....

in comparison...i don't use dynomat or any other materials either and i am at 149.1 officially....less money...more power....you can't go wrong...

ooh a fight-

your correct that the jl amps are good- they just cost too much. virtually anythign is better than a new rockford sq wise (so its a poor amp to use as a comparison)

i paid roughly 45% of what you paid for my 1501d mtx amp and your 1000/1 jl. Mine makes 1169 at 12 volts according to the hand written test measurements from the factory. My truck used to run at 13.8 volts, but with my new alt, two new auxiliary batteries and upgraded wiring i'm hoping to see over 14 volts from my system. I expect to see actual rms power in the dynamic range of 1600-1800 depending on how things are running and the temperatures of everything. even if the jl has better sq your never gonna know while listening to something that knocks like two 65 lb 15s (since thats what i have).

so the moral is don't buy rockford, but dont' pay too much for something where the gains you get out of it are minimal over the competition (jl)

if you really want to spend some money and get what you pay for i say go with eclipse. I can get you some pretty good deals on their equipment and they have a better name than jl and have earned it. their amps will truly amaze you. the 7122 would be awesome!

Well said expo.....

However I am really partial to the Concept name and if you wanted to go there let me know I am pretty sure I can get you a nice price on some of their stuff...however not as sure as expo at this point because i have to make one more phone call.....after concept comes the focal phone call :)

focal subs! if you've really got the money to pay retail for a w7 and a 1000/1--- it would rule to get focal subs and eclipse amp... honestly it would be so much cooler and would definitely sound better.

that said the prices i see "wholesale" on the focal subs still are plenty high relative to mtx or ed or whomever else in relationship to their performance.
