Hi all! Just joined in order to look for some help for my cousin. She has a 2007 4.0 that recently overheated and blew the head gasket. A couple of mechanics took a look and told her she needs a new engine and radiator.

Could someone recommend a source for a replacement engine? One mechanic found one locally with 60k miles for $2000.

If you've had experience replacing an engine, please chime in!

Thanks!!

where are you located?
$2,000 seems a bit much for a used engine. maybe for a 4.6L V8 but not for the v6.
iv seem many junk yard ones for other cars go for $150-500. but depends where you live.

I thought it was expensive as well. It is the 4.0L v6.

Is there anything in particular we have to keep an eye out for when looking for an engine? I've seen some listings mention something about a check digit on the engine number.

low miles. if its in the truck still in the junk yard see if they can start it for you first before taking it out. i would pull all the plugs and check compression on it first before buying it. Take the oil cap off and look inside and see how clean it looks. See if they will give you any warranty like 30day or 1,000 miles or something or if they sell one for like $100 or so.

Pull the valve covers and have a look at the timing chain guides if its over 100k miles. Also E or K digit should work, but keep you hardware as you will have to swap it if you get one from a mustang or a ranger. If you have a 4x4, try for one from a 4x4, they have an extra balance shaft running from the crank. Some people complain about vibrations if they get the 2wd version. I was quoted 2k just to swap the motor, plus gaskets, so I did it myself. a 2 day job, 1 to pull the motor, 1 to swap parts and install. Good luck.

I'm not a mechanic so sorry if is a dumb question but can he put a V8 from another explorer if possible? no crazy mods and stuff, just a plain swap from a matching explorer? probably need the 6 speeds transmission also.

It would be cheaper and less time consuming to just go ahead and buy another exploder with a V8.

Still looking ?
I just bough a v8 engine from swengines
they had the best price.
