need help 97 explorer speed odometer

i need help the speedometer in my 97 explorer stoped working, what can i do to see whats wrong, i read some where bout if the abs light is on that has something to do with it, but my abs light has been on for months now cause the wire is broke on the pass side. an the speedometer still worked. need help on what to check an what could be wrong an how to replace.

Check the Transfer Case

Maybe you could look at the transfer case, where the rear driveshaft is...the speed sensor is right there.
