Need help diagnosing shock problem!?!?

I installed a set of Edelbrock IAS shocks in November. They worked as advertised up until recently. Now, it seems like there is no damping in the back. The back of my Explorer bounces up after hitting a bump. If I'm going around a corner with bumps the back end skips around. Also, when I stop hard, there is a klunk sound when the suspension settles. I just think it's odd for two shocks to go bad so soon. The old bounce the car and see how long it takes to stop bouncing says that everything is OK, but something is up. Someone told me to check all the bolts/mounts for the shocks and the leaf springs, but everything is nice and tight. Please help me diagnose... Thanks.

Where are you at? Could the temperature have something to do with your rough ride..Are they adjustable? And the clunk does sound like a loose shock or bad bushing..

Do they have a warranty or guarantee? Check with the dealer that sold them to you. The rear shocks are a bit different than the front and I could see how both rear shocks have gone bad. It could be that one went bad and you never knew about it and the other shock tried to take up the slack and went out because of that.

I would check to see if they have a warranty and if they do exchange them for a new set.

When you say it clunks when the shock settles, do you mean once the shock has stopped moving it clunks? Sometimes loose shackles will clunk. Tighten your shackles a few turns and then see if you still hear it.

Checked the shocks, but...

Well, I checked all the bolts, shackles, etc. but everything was nice and tight. BTW Edelbrock has a great lifetime warranty. It's just the hassle of taking them off and sending them back. In the meantime I'll have to buy another set to put on while those are being evaluated to see if they want to fix or replace. I'm just dissappointed that $70 shocks go bad after four months. Well the warranty is great, now let's see how the customer service is...

rear klunk

I also am hearing a klunk in the rear following a hard stop. It occurs as the suspension is settling in the rear. I have had the vehicle looked at by two mechanics, and they both found all bushings intact, and everything was tight. Could this be the shock absorbers? I don't know what else it could be. Please let me know.

Problem Solved.

Well, I finally gave up trying to diagnose the problem, so I took my truck to the professionals. They told me at Ford that all the shackles/mounts/bolts were fine, but the back left shock had gone bad. Of course they charged me for the diagnosis, but threw in a free shock so I'd be able to drive while I returned the broken shock to Edelbrock. The guy even told me to come back and see him when I got the new one and he'd put it in for me. I originally installed them myself, but hey, why not take him up on the offer. I guess those dealership guys can be cool. Now let me just see how long it takes for me to get the shock replaced.
