I have a 1998 AWD- V8 Ford Explorer, Axle code D4= 3.73l (ratio) well I'm assuming the ratio is the same for both Front and Rear Diff.
well I end up shipping my truck to PERU (south America) 2 years ago, and on my last trip my Front differential while a was doing 65MPH on the highway started drop and to smoke burned diff oil with a bad noise, bad very bad, Stop tow the truck and they replace the gear oil, new grease and thinking it was find after 100 miles later smoke burned diff oil again and a bad noise off the front differential at 30-40MPH, I decided not to drive the truck anymore, now that I'm back to the States I Can't take a whole differential down there is to dawn heavy, so I'm thinking to take all the internal parts that could be damage and replace them.
my question is, I need a list of the potential parts that could be damage and a list of bearing and gaskets that I may need, is there a better parts brand that I can go for? I'm towing a boat as well and also Off road 60% of the time, Dune sand as well, I need help in getting all the part and numbers that I may need to fix my front differential.
can you or someone help me with this matter.
my truck runs with standard tires sizes, is a 1998 V8 AWD, 5.0 axle code [D4] off the door label = (3.73L ratio) Help, and ready to purchase all the parts but I need guidance in what to get and if there is any kits for such job.
thanks a lot PEPEANCON from NJ

You will potentially need - Ring & Pinion, carrier, carrier bearings, pinion bearings, an an installation kit. The install kit comes with all the shims, gaskets and seals. Some install kits include the bearings as well. If you are not an experienced mechanic, I would not recommend doing this yourself. There are special tools that are needed and the cost to purchase them does not justify buying them to do one set of gears. Talk to your local off-road or transmission/differential shop for prices on parts.
