First, let me say that EF.com has been a great resource as I've been helping a friend put his '97 Explorer back together after someone else started to replace his waterpump and never finished.

We've gotten everything back together, but there's still one plug that we've been unable to track down where it plugs into. From some quick research I've come up with maybe the EGR system or the ignition system. I'm including some pics to help out as well. This is for a 1997 Explorer with the 4.0L SOHC engine. The plug has two wires, one blue and one gray.

Here is what is on the plug itself:

There is a metal clip that hold that on. It goes (unless there are two) right next to your oil fill cap. I think it is a sensor for the timing chain (not sure) or a nock sensor. I cannot find the correct diagram for it.

so it attaches to the driver side valve cover right next to the oil fill cap.

edit: there may be another one on the back of the passenger side valve cover.

OK Found it, it is the Camshaft position sensor (CMP)

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I noticed the groove around the outside of the plug, but couldn't find where it slid in to.

Well, I just checked my friend's Explorer, and it's not for the connector next to the oil filler cap. That plug is there and plugged in. However, the one I'm trying to track down is similar in that it has a metal retaining clip that goes around it.

I did pull the plug that connects next to the oil filler cap, and the numbers on it are identical to the ones on the plug that I posted(I changed them in the original post). However, the one plugged in next to the filler cap has two wires, one blue and one gray, but both have red stripes(the one I posted doesn't have the stripes). Is the one that I posted just a misc. plug that wasn't used on the '97 SOHC model, but was part of the wiring harness? It appears to come off of the same bundle as the sensors on top of the thermostat housing. There's also a number #1 and a #2 for the individual wires on the plug itself.

I added a 4th pic to the original post to better show the length of the wires on the plug.

Any other ideas?

OK, got it..

That is the crankshaft position sensor, your gonna hate your self in a few seconds. The plug is located on the front of the engine down by the crankshaft, and the plug snakes down through all the accessories on the front of the engine. It took a few wiring diagrams and I just happen to have a spare engine and wiring harness from a little engine replacement of my own.

Hopefully you can get that thing in there with all the stuff bolted down. you will need to look up from the bottom to see the plug if everything is already on the engine. The plug is located on the passenger side of the crankshaft right where the timing marks and such are.

Good luck

I had a feeling that it was going to get plugged in somewhere with no clearance. Guess we'll just have to be patient and try not to get too frustrated...haha. Thanks for the help, it's really appreciated.

Very good, and use one of the locking springs from the other connectors if needed. That crank sensor is very important. Good luck,
