Hello Explorers!
Greetings from another carclub! (I run a large 3000GT/Stealth club)
I love Fords...I used to have an 89 Ranger...loved it!

Well on to my question...
Through private sale, I am looking to buy this used 93 Explorer XLT (2WD I believe). It is white and has almost 76,000 miles. It looks sharp and looks like it was taken care of. The owner wants $7,600. I checked Kelley's and Edmund's and was shocked to see that the prices were so low. As you all are the experts, I would trust your judgements...what should I pay for it? I was thinking 6000 or 6500? Is that fair, or should I pay the 7,600?

Also, were there any recalls for this year? Any problems or conditions that I should be aware of?

I would appreciate any and all replies as I would like to make the most educated decision possible and I know you guys are the ones to turn to! :)

Thanks for your time,
AJ

go to carpoint.msn.com,they have a good site and give you some idea what a dealer would want.

i own a 93 4*4 and its listed at between 4200 and 9000

hope this helps.

I just got back from the test drive... everything seems ok, except when I let it open at full throttle the engine is making this clicking sound. What is causing that? My ranger used to do that when I was low on gas.

yikes! $7,600 for a '93!?!

i've got a '92 Ranger XLT 2wd for sale for LESS THAN HALF of that, only 500 miles away, you could hop on southwest air and i'll pick ya up at the airport :-) its the "for sale" section if you are interested.

oops!
The car is an EXPLORER XLT. :)
Not a Ranger XLT. I used to have a ranger. I'm looking into buying this Explorer now. Sorry for the confusion!

yeahhhhh...

but unfortunately, i don't have an X for sale, so i'm trying to pitch my Ranger. <sigh> pardon me for slipping into a plaid jacket for a moment, but i'd like to sell it.

still, seems a little steep for an X of that vintage, even with the fairly low miles, but then it IS in Kali... and EVERYTHING seems to be inflated there.

hech, last week i saw a 2wd Jimmy for $600... but that's a chebbie. ;-)

LOL!!!

:)

I agree.

By the way, how much does it cost to rent a 2 bedroom home in Vegas these days that takes pets? I've been thinking for awhile about relocating! As long as the Vegas tech industry starts growing.

in november i bought my 92 explorer XLT 4X4 for $3200. it was in perfect condition (i still havent had any problems with it, better not jinx myself).

so a 93 XLT 4X2 should be about the same.

you can also look on ebay. sometimes there are great deals there. i bought my daytona on ebay for real cheap.

I think that 6 grand is about a good price for a 93' 2WD. I have mothing to base it on though because I didn't buy my Explorer. It was . . . a . . . (HMMMM)gift.

hmmm, you might check out the classifieds at www.lasvegas.com. not really sure what a house would rent for, but if the pets are dogs, i can show you where the dawg parks are.

it also depends on what part of town you want to be in... there are the combat zones, the uhh, fru-fru sections (you can have the Sultan of Bahrain, Mike Tyson and Wayne Newton for neighbors... if you want) and the places in-between. truly something for every budget.

new houses are about half the price of what they would be in the bay area, but remember that "chips" are something completely different here, but once you get away from the strip the newer parts of town.

I paid $4000 for my 93 and it's in mint condidtion. But I look at all the things it's going to need, like a new A$$4LD one of these days with good rebuilds going at around $2000 I knew I didnt get that good of a deal. If it has the stick I guess $6000 would be ok, (clutches are much easier and cheaper to replace than A4LDs) more than I would pay but thats what most people want for them. If it's an automatic and hasnt been rebuilt I would think twice about paying $6000 unless it has some other features that make it worth the $2000 you might have to lay out in the near future. Keep in mind that the automatics often fail without warning.

i got shafted... my 94 limited was A LOT more than all of these.. but I did buy it in Chicago.. in november.. right before winter... After tax: $10,300.... im pissed now.. so no one say anything like "WOW!".. just leave it be.. heh

Let me add a power steering pump (noisy) AC compressor (didnt work very well courtesy of the AC shop that didnt put any oil in the system) and other little odds and ends that I had to replace when I got my $4000 special, none of these things really needed replacement but the power steering noise was bothersome and the AC didnt really get cold enough for me plus other little things that were just common sense. I mostly bought because it has the straightest body and nicest original paint of any 1st generation explorer I have ever seen.

Thanks all for all your help!

I want to thank you all for giving me the head ups on the pricing....

Me and my fiancee went ahead and bought the Explorer. As it turned out, it WAS the 4X4. We bought it for $6500. It's in really great condition, great exterior/paint, and the interior is still in excellent condition. The only things that need to be repaired are the the left blinker (doesn't blink), the left brake light (won't light when braking), the right rear door lock won't work with the powerlocks, and the 4X4 buttons won't engage the 4X4 or do anything. If any of you have any help to offer me in regards to these, I would greatly appreciate it.

I want to thank you all again for your friendliness and I am happy to be on this board as a new Explorer owner! I wanted to go out and buy a new 02 Explorer! I love it!

:)
AJ

P.S. We are going to go pay Explorer Express a visit and give em some business after reading some of your positive comments on them.

Congrats on your purchase. Probably nothing more than a bad bulb for your left turnsignal/brake light. I think the first gen explorer uses the same filament in the bulb for both. Do a search for the 4x4 problem as there are plenty of threads related to it, once again it shouldnt be anything hard or costly to fix.
