As some of you know, I wrecked my sport trac. I now have a 1999 Explorer with the 5.0. I went to get it emission tested this morning so I could register and It failed! Fuel cap portion of the test passed so I don't think that is it. No check engine light on, and I went ahead and had codes checked anyways, nothing.

The evap systems test info portion has the pressure set at a limit of 6.00 inches/h2o. but their is no reading number to go by what the pressure was tested as?(maybe they forgot to add that in the report?) And the results for this test read as fail so as it goes, I failed the emission test. I need to get this fixed as I have 10 days to get it reinspected for free and I don't want to spend my money again to get it tested.

So, Any ideas? I've read that it could be the fuel filler line but mine is metal, not rubber? And if anyone has a diagram of the evap system I could look at, even better. TIA.

This is very hard to help with since OBD II isn't throwing and codes. Usually even the slightest issue with EVAP will trigger the CEL. Hell, a faulty gas cap throws a CEL.

Lil Bo,
Are you sure the EVAPS actually failed or did it show that it was not enabled to test. I understand you just got the vehicle and maybe it hasn't tested itself yet. There are about six conditions (not sure exactly) that must be met before the PCM will command the EVAPS to self test. Some of the conditions are - the gas tank must be more than half full to 3/4 full, engine temp and coolant temp must be a certain value, engine rpm must be in a certain range (the test is enable while going down the highway at a certain speed), Barometric pressure must be within a certain value, maybe several other conditions. Sorry I can't give you the actual numbers, doing this at work and don't have my books here. I see you live in CO. If you are in the mountains, because of the barometric pressure requirement the EVAPS may never self test. The only way around these issues is to use a Ford tester that can bypass these requirements and make the system go ahead and selftest.

Thanks Tbars, I found that and I've been reading here and there as I get time. Lot's of info there. I talked to the emissions test center supervisor and she seemed to think that what happend was I passed the fact that I had a gas cap in place and she thought the actual gas cap failed the test. Not anything else. I'm going to look at all evap lines and buy a new gas cap but I'll probably have to take it to Ford and have them test all sensors and smoke test the evap system anyways.

...From what you just stated I would only buy a new gas cap and do a re-test..

...As mentioned, you would usually get a code if you had an emission related problem.. If you have any more problems, get the specifics from the tester and bring it back here..;)

So strange, No code was ever generated or the gas cap light but this did end up being a faulty gas cap. Passed emissions last week without a problem!

GLad to see it was a cheap fix..:biggthump
