(first of all, thread title should say "from attempted theft" not "for attempted theft) haha
Hi everyone,
I haven't posted on the forum in years, simply because my explorer rocks and for what it's worth, runs like a top!
Unfortunately some jerk tried to steal it on Friday. He did a number on the ignition cylinder, basically destroying it and making it unusable.
I talked to a locksmith, and he says the job will cost around $200. He also said I need an ignition transponder ring. (chip key system, a little ring that is located right around the outer ring of the cylinder.) I have one waiting for me at the dealership, which I will pick up tomorrow.
So here are the questions:
Can I use my old key with the new transponder ring?
The locksmith said he could set everything up using my old key.
Also, do you think the locksmith has OEM Ford components?
I'm guessing he won't, and I'd like to have the OEM cylinder, but time and money is of the essence. The dealership might be $$$, and ebay sells OEMs for around $30. Maybe I could get away with waiting a few more days.
Finally, are there any other security risks I need to consider?
I would hate to have this happen again. Fortunately, the thief couldn't steal the truck, (he did get my head unit, f****** ******) and I would like to try to do this right so it's back to stock.
What else do I need to consider?
I've never had to deal with ignition cylinders on any of my vehicles, so I'm kinda clueless. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!
