Need Help! Replaced spark plugs with platinums, not double plats. Performance probs.

Hey guys/gals,

I replaced my plugs last weekend and now I'm experiencing stumble, hesitation, and exhaust backfire.

I also just bought a new set of oem wires to resolve this due to the symtoms and I am still having this issue.

I did a search to cross reference spark plug part #'s and I thought I had found the correct info, but I am not a 100% sure on this.

Also, while searching this forum, I read somewhere that if stock plugs are replaced that you "must" replace the plugs with double platinums. I thought I was buying the correct part from ford when I had asked them for platinum plugs.

The part # I am using for plugs is:

AGSF22FM F6

When I was at the dealer purchasing these, I was having my X serviced at the time. The cost of labour was racking up, so I had asked if they could just leave the plugs on the front seat for me to do. If they gave me the wrong part, can I hold them accountable for this? What if something is damaged due to this?

I will be switching out one plug at a time in the morn to correct this thinking that I have a faulty plug otherwise.

Correct?

Did you gap them all properly? Sometimes when we replace plugs we bump or drop them and throw the gap off! OR you could just have a bad new plug. OR wires crossed when replacing the plugs which is hard to do but not impossible.
How was your X running before you put the plugs in?
Check the fireing order and the plug wire placement. Check for spark at each plug.
Maybe you bumped something else off when changing the plugs. Check all your hoses and wire connections.

Back fire is usually a sure thing when you cross the plug wires!

not sure how necessary this is but did you use dielectric grease it will make it alot easier to get the wires off.

the coil pack should be numbered.

make sure you got the right plugs other people have gotten plugs for the ohv and the engine will not run right. are they the same as the plugs yoiu pulled

I gapped them at .051 for each.

Ran fine after the service. I figured I should change them after getting a tune up.

One thing did happen though... I was working on her when the hood fell down (poor struts) and cracked the engine cover (4.0 SOHC). I removed it looking for damage but could not find anything. Is it possible that I may have to remove the plastic intake at the top of the engine? The one after the TB to engine? I searched and felt all around and seem to be fine.

LOL...I also ran a puddle before going to the garage. Not to deep, but enough to splash the windshield. Air filter is 100% dry.

Thats the problem...there not the same part # as the ones I pulled. Same length, diff PN. I have a feeling the dealer screwed me?

I used grease on the first set of wires. I replace these wires thinking this was the prob. The motorcraft wires came pre-greased.

I'm thinking of changing out the plugs. But I paid $70 for the set after tax (Canadian eh).

Hate to eat that cost...

just return them they were ovbiously the wrong plugs.
you can also get autolite they are made by honeywell i think they same company that makes the motocraft plogs.

i currently have the bosch+4 platnium plugs and they are great. some people will say they are not good in the hotter runnung american engines but they have worked just fine for me

I read that in my search that you of all peeps around here have had no probs running with plat 4's, and have had good results.

I'll also call the stealer tomorrow and see if they can give me a part number for the plugs I should use, and reference that to the ones they gave me.

Billy177 & old mech,

I pulled all six plugs and found one to have cracked porcelain. I am now of to the dealer for a refund and a new purchase of a plug.
