Who or what is the trick to finding a salvaged Explorer V-8?

THAT is the trick...

I got mine from CL for $450....COMPLETE...

Others have done the same..

Just type in "Ford Explorer" in the search bar there...or Explorer V8, Explorer 5.0L, Explorer AWD (only the V8 was AWD in the 2nd Gens)
