Hello all,
Having some problems with mine, it has been a while since I messed with anything this new..
2002 Explorer XLT, 4.6 4wd 231300miles
Symptoms are;;

When cranking (hot or cold)
Idle goes to 2500 for about 4 seconds then drops to 2000 for a few and then to 1000 for a few and then to normal..

When coming to a stop;;
Will not idle down, stays around 1500 for a few seconds, then drops.
During this it will not downshift..
Shifting to neutral when approaching stop does nothing for idle, still stays high for several seconds..

all the shifts are working good, OD will come on/off like it should, it does downshift under accel like normal..
Not having any trouble with it cranking, it doesnt stall or shudder...
Cruise control is working fine, on or off doesnt affect the problem

Used a Bosch 105 Bluetooth obd on it ,, no codes active,, emissions are showing good
No warning lights are coming on..

If this was my '69F250 I would quess there was something holding the throttle open, but I didnt see anything binding the linkages..

I am at a loss here...

Thanks

Sounds like the throttle plate is sticking. First thing I would do is buy a can of throttle body cleaner (do not use carb cleaner) and clean the throttle body. The best way is to clean it is by removing the throttle body but you could remove the snorkel from the air filter and clean it that way. Unhook the battery while you do it also.

Will give that a go in the AM when I get off work and report back,, thanks

Sticking throttle plate sounds wrong. Because it does this at start up. You need to clean out and oil the Idle Air Control. A very easy and simple task. Not a sticking throttle

Or could also be, with that many miles, cracked vacuum lines allowing air into the intake. But this would set off code. Most likely.

I will clean both iac and throttle body

Sorry for the delay in getting back, been rather busy at work..
I took the IAC off at work but found it to be bad, so I took it apart and pushed the piston down to where it would idle around 700..
The springs in it were weak and could not hold the piston in place, it would open but wouldnt close correctly..
This patch got me home, just waiting on payday to get replacement valve, Ford wont order till I pay for it so it will be a few days...
Thanks for the suggestions and help....

You might also want to consider the OP on this thread -

Where the article says:

"2) The accelerator cables on some models were too long causing accelerator pedals to stick."

Probably not your problem but maybe it could be that the cable has stretched over time?

Checked that, mine is the IAC.. Someone had put one of the cheap ones on and the piston and rod in it were floating around..I took it apart and bound up the piston and rod so it would idle down.. Picked up the new part on the way in to work tonight will put it on in the AM...
