I have a 99 Explorer XLT with the 4.0 sohc with the 5spd auto trans. Was thinking about doing a manual tran swap. What trans do i need to use? I dont know alot about Ford vehicles much less these newer models. Thank you for any help sent my way.

Do a search in the trans sub-forum for it.

2WD so, this maybe a little harder to find the proper ECM, & harness' for the swap. You have PATS, so a tune may have to be done to override it. I would think your rear drive shaft would work, but if not, a custom shaft can be made.

I owned a '99 w/M5OD, good vehicle, bought w/105K, sold w/180k, no issues or problems at all.

My thinking about such a swap (auto to manual) centers around the problems of adding a clutch pedal assembly; the work to be done under-dash ain't the easiest......Of course, manual clutch uses hydraulic clutch release, requires adding the master cylinder and fluid line.......fabricating custom clutch pedal system pretty involved, I imagine a wrecked EXPL. might be found having salvageable parts. buying new from Ford may noit be option, sometimes older than 10-years models no longer stocked parts. Think manual trans. option discontinued about 2001.

Most interesting mod. for an Expl., though, please do relate your experiences, if you go ahead with it. imp

It shouldnt be that hard. I have actually seen a factory 4dr. Explorer with the manual. i just wish I could see it again and talk to the guy. Thats where I got the idea from. They say if I was doing a V8 swap, to use a trans from an F-150 and have the ecu whould need to be flashed to remove the auto out. I dont know but I will figure it out thou. Thanks guys

There are many of us that have converted to manual, (I'm one of them) and it is a bigger undertaking then it looks like. Its not so much the actual physical swap of the trans that is hard, but the electronics itself that present headaches to overcome.

All the swaps I have seen are for 4wd vehicles, or 2wd to 4wd conversions. Anyone wanting to go 2wd, has been an 5.0 AWD, and eliminating the t-case, and swapping to another auto trans. I only know one person that went 5.0 manual, but is 4wd, using a 4406 t-case out of an F-150.

I have a thread on my swap, it lists the details for a 95 manual swap. No pats to deal with, and is an OHV in mine. The pedal, reverse lights, BOO, CPP, harness, floor shifter install, starter, trans prep, are all the same though.

Have a read, and you will see what I mean.

Real good & valuable reply, IMO! Copied so my short-mindedness can refer back to points made..... FWIW, back in the 90's, when converting carburetted to EFI, EEC-IV technology used differing computers (PCM) for manual vs. auto. trans. I found either PCM worked equally well with the manuals....'course, there was no electronic control of shifting yet- AOD trans. being used.

Ford sold (maybe still available) a kit through Motorsports (?, name may be changed) which updated 19#/hr injectors to 24....it was basically the same set-up used in the Mustang Cobra. This worked really well with 351W eng. Would post pics. of a '69 Mach I I did for a guy in Albuquerque, but no access to My Pictures right now, sorry, they are stuck in my hard-drive back home, 1500 mi. away......anyone interested in EFI conversions, just ask. imp
