I need some help!!! I have an 05 explorer and when I fill up with gas my fuel guage will be on full and all of a sudden it will drop to below E. then a few minutes later it will go to the 3/4 mark. then the SES light will come on. I went and had the codes pulled ant it says there is a problem with the fuel sender. Once I get to about 1/2 tank it starts working correctly untill I get low on gas then when I refill it starts acting up again. I am not thinking it is a short in the wiring because it starts working correctly below 1/2 tank. Can anyone tell me how the fuel sender wiring enters the truck? I would like to possibly visually trace the wiring and look for a nicked wire before having to drop the tank. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the fuel wiring? Does anyone know if the fuel pump and sender is one unit or can the be purchased seperatly. Sorry about the long post just trying to give/get as much info as possible.

See dealer... this is a recall issue. Or do a search on gas gauges, and this problem will pop up... good luck!

I had the same thing on my 04.

When I would fill up it would take a LONG time to show full. Like 15miles+ of driving.

I took it to a dealer about a year ago and they "fixed" it. I think it was just a PCM update.

Recently it started doing the same thing, but not very often. I'm not going to have them mess with it again.

to answer your question, it appears to me that the harness travels in the passenger side channel, and drops through around where the tank is (pass side aft of the front footwells. Big black plastic thing - I'd be careful trying to support a full one with a jack. I am betting you'd punch a hole in that thing.
