This might sound dumb, but is the truck in park?

alec, god bless you!!! it was in park, but the shifter needed a little jiggle. you are my savior! i was already calculating costs for repairing and towing. thank you so much!

Don't sweat it, happened to me a few times.

I almost flipped out after I just bought my X. I was used to driving my Nissan Pathfinder with a stick and within a week of owning my Explorer I turned it off and couldn't get the freekin key out. It took me a good 5 minutes to remember I was driving an auto and just didn't put it in park!

neutral safety switches sometimes go bad or need to adjust the linkage to make contact with the actuator, removal of the negative cable on the battery will release the key. currently working on a 2010 explorer that has the same trouble with the column not locking regardless of the negative cable being removed.
