Need Immediate help with Ticking

For the past two weeks i have been hearing a ticking at higher than idle RPMs.
the ticking occurs every two seconds with the frequency increasing as the RPMs climb.

This is does not sound like lifter / lash adjuster. It almost sounds like pre-ignition if I didn't know any better.

Any tip is much appreciated .

can you tell us where you think the sound is coming from. There are many possibilities for a ticking sound.

sorry,
it's a 99 4.0l sohc

the noise is very difficult to track down as it seems to echo quiet a bit under the car and even with a stethoscope i had a difficult time finding the exact origin.

My fear is that it may be a timing chain, from the rear of the engine.
