Need new tires

they are not too bad they let you know your having a flat and shouldnt be expected to monitor exact pressure it just has a range of ok, over id assume(i run 45), low, and very low...
when i air down to 20-25 it says very low and beeps it 3 times?? every five mins or so kinda gets annoying but oh well
is comforting to know more than likely a sudden vibration or noise is or isn't a deflating tire...

The warning sensor for low tire pressure would drive me insane going off every 5 minutes or so. I'd have to smash my fist into the dashboard. Ford can stick all these sensors up their a$$. The other morning I was going to the gym at 4am, it was frosty cold outside, in the upper 20's, the lousy back up sensors on the rear bumper had frost on them, so the alarm for being too close to an object went off as I backed up out of the driveway. They even go off when snow is falling. I drove a long time before cars ever had this crap installed on them and survived just fine and I can live without them. All these useless sensors are just a PITA for me and they just wind up costing us more out of pocket money in repairs when one of the sensors takes a $hit and you have to replace it.

Before you blast Ford, remember that the government dictates what the automakers should do, such as airbags, fuel economy, truck releases, TPMS, etc. I hate those TPMS because they aren't accurate. They work by letting the driver know that a tire is low compared with the others, so if all 4 of my tires are improperly inflated to say 24 PSI, the light won't come on until one tire falls below a certain number, like 20 PSI, and as we know with oil change or other lights on the dasy, they are often ignored. But, the government says that automakers have to have them on cars for safety.

I LOVE my backup sensors, I have an 02 and they work flawlessly. Incredible for parallel parking and backing up in general. If you can't stand the beep in rain, snow, etc, then I think you have patience and/or anger problems. Not to mention there IS a button by the steeringwheel to disable it should you desire to do so

I blast Ford for making crappy parts (like sensors) that don't last or work right. The over abundance of useless sensors is just a nuisance and a way to get more money out of your pocket when they fail, and they will fail because they build them to fail. People safely drove in this country for decades long before they installed a sensor for every lousy function on a car. If anything, these sensors that beep numerous times or flash on the message screen distract you as you drive when they go off, so that in itself is a safety hazzard.

No knock on you or anything, but I paralleled parked cars and backed up into parking spaces etc safely for decades (spotless driving record), by paying attention to what I'm doing behind the wheel of a car, not being lazy and turning my head around and using my eyes and driving skills to perform these manuvers without much effort on my part, long before some nuisance sensor came along to do it for me. When the backup sensor goes off because of leaves, snow or frost, then it doesn't work correctly as intended and is useless and the one in my Ex, does not work "flawlessly". As far as the patience or anger comment I must laugh, I have the patience and temper control of a Saint, having spent a 25 year career and now retired, working as a C.O./Sgt in the NY State Prison System. If I had any of these assumptions you made about me here with your comment, simply because I commented that I dislike nuisance vehicle sensors, I wouldn't have made it past my 1st year on the job working in that field. I'll make an assumption here on you since you did on me, maybe you like listening to the sensors going off because you are from the video game era, or younger than me? Or, it could be that you need extra help from the vehicle's on board system (like backup sensors) to help you safely drive a car or SUV rather than having the driving skills to do it on your own? Just an assumption here. BTW, if you made your anger or patience comment because I mentioned in one of my other posts that I would have to "smash my fist into the dashboard listening to a sensor go off every 5 minutes", then you read way too much into my comment and lack common sense. I was joking! Do you really think I would punch my own dashboard causing more damage to my vehicle because of a noisy sensor, thus costing me more money on repairs than I have already put into this vehicle? Not gonna happen! On the button to turn off the backup sensor, wasn't aware there is one, but if it works like some of the others things on these Ex's, I'll probably have to fix it soon. Thanks for the heads up though on the button.

Back on the subject of tires, I had a set of General brand Grabbers installed when I bought the truck from the Ford dealer and have been very satisfied with them. Don't recall the exact price but seems it was less than $500 mounted.

There are a lot of tires on the market that don't have to cost an arm and a leg. Mainly shops, independent or national chains, offer a wide variety, and my recommendation is to 'Google' different brands. Most of the time the vehicle owner is paying for the name -- Goodyear's that cost $210 a tire vs. Cooper Starfire's for $127, etc. We live in the day and age of the web, and there is so much info. out there that it is amazing.

I looked through this thread and could not find what I was looking for.. but I have an '02 XLT with 16" stock rims and I have 235/70/16 on them and I was looking to go a little bigger and beefier like some sort of A/T tire but I don't want to have to calibrate for bigger tires and lose MPG's.. what is the biggest size I could go and wouldn't really notice a big difference? :)

Send a message to "Fusseli or Wills05xlt4x4" in this section. They both are running P265's on 16 in rims. Maybe they can steer you in the right direction.

From your original post, I thought you were looking for tires for a 17" rim, not 16 in. I saw a few guys running P265's on 17 in rims in this section, don't know if you can get that size tire on a 16 in rims, sorry, my screw up.

I know it is possible I just don't wanna lose any MPG or have to calibrate for the bigger tires. I was wondering what's the biggest size I could go before I had to do that or lose mpg! I already get 15 mpg

You might have a better chance at a quick answer if you post the question in the "Modified" forum instead of the "Stock" forum. Just a suggestion.

It's just above this one, IIRC.

I went from stock sized 245-65/16 (29.5") Michelin highway tires to my Cooper 265-70/16 (30.5"). Speedometer actually reads dead-on now, as it read a little high prior to the upsize. Nice change in appearance and ride, awesome difference on muddy roads and in the snow. I didn't notice a change in mpg but it may have been soemthing slight like 0.5-1.0mpg or something, put the k&n in not long after and saw a 1-2mpg increase when that went in so I'm really not worried about it.

The largest you can run with no rub and no lift they say is 265-75/16 (31.5") but I too was afraid of losing mpg so I went with the compromise. If ever I buy tires again on this vehicle I'll be getting the bigger ones yet.

For what it's worth, i'm fond of the Continental Cross Contact LX. for around $130 a tire, they are good for all year round. I got them at Discount Tire because they always price match the Tire Rack online price. I've used them on my 02 mountaineers for the past 2 years and will get another set this winter

I replaced the stock BFGoodrich all terrains with General Grabbers. Then I just replaced them last week with the Cooper Discoverer AT3. Really like the Discoverer AT3. I would recommend either the General or the Cooper.

I put on a set of general grabbers exactly a year ago. Really like them and would second the recommendation.

The AT3 replaced the ATR, so they better be good  I really like my ATRs
