Hi all, I have a 2000 explorer with a 5r55e that has been acting up. It had a delay going into drive and reverse.
I replaced the separator gasket, and put in the service kit and filter. That didn't help at all.
Then I put in a epc, tcc and changed the 2-3 solenoid as many on here recommended. Maybe I should have put that solenoid on the 1st gear? So now I still have the delay into forward, Reverse is quick to go into gear (YEA). Each time that I got done working on it the delay was about 2-5 seconds but got continually worse up to 5-10 seconds.
Also after only 100 miles between the 2 repairs it seems as though a lot of crud is in the pan. I hope that its just crap getting loosened up.
Anyway PLEASE help. I really like the explorer but?
Thanks
Scott

The shift solenoids don't control forward engagement, but they do control which gear it will be in. Forward engagement is controlled with the manual valve in the valve body. Fluid is routed to the center support and to the forward drum. With the problem getting worse when it gets hot it indicates a leak in the hydraulic circuit.

The sealing rings on the forward drum are a common failure spot for forward drum problems, they get thin and wear down enough to start leaking. Of course this can on be fixed by removing the transmission and tearing it down. Other areas that can cause a delay into drive can be leaks in the valve body due to worn bores and valves.

I personally think that the problem will be with the drum rather than the valve body.

Crud in the pan only indicates damage, most likely from the forward clutch.

If the transmission fluid smells burnt, it's the clutch packs. You probably have more than one issue.
