Ok, I don't own an Explorer, I have a Ranger w/ 9's of lift...but my brother does own a 96 Explorer. As you can imagine, he feels a little insignificant parked next to me, and would love to be able to wheel w/ me. Now, what can be done to his rig? I know thaqt Superlift will be making a 4" lift fothe SLA Explorers, but they won't be cheap. What other mods are currently available for this vehicle. It a 96 Explorer Sport, obviously it has an auto tranny, auto tcase and hubs, 4.0L, but what else can be done? TIA

Not true. The newer explorers don't have hubs....they use a different system to go into 4x4.

If your looking to gain some bigger meats go ahead and do a search on the torsion twist. It's a easy way to gain about and inch or so for about $50. Other than that the skys the limit. You could regear it with lockers, or put in a new air filter. The explorer out of the box is a great off-highway SUV and with the right mods is surly one of the best.

I'd also like to welcome you to the site. You'll find anything and everything all right here.

I realize that I can .....

lock it and gear it and all that. It's not my vehivle. I was wondering if there are any Aftermarket lifts available yet. Any body lifts, and what can be done to level the thing out w/ shackles and an add aleaf, in the rear? Is it possible to use a Ranger 4x4 leaf pack in the rear. If t was I wish I'd kept my old ones to give to him. Locking the rear vfor him is out of the question. All he's intersted in is about 3"s or so so that he can run 31's or 32's. Thanks. Coda

There are aftermarket kits out there, but for light wheeling I'm not sure if that's the best bet. You're looking in the area of 1500 for the lift alone. As for the body lift, the 91-94 body bolts on the same way as the newer explorers, so you could use a lift from those years. The bumper is the only thing that will need to be changed. With a small body lift you should be able to run the tires just fine.

I don't think a ranger leaf pack will give him the added lift for the rear, but I do know they work together. The best way to lift the rear without shackles or leafs would be OME. They make a great set of springs and ride like a dream. They sould lift the rear about 2" out of the box, which should be fine as well for 32's.

Coda,
There are many, many different options - it all depends on the budget. I have a 3" body lift on mine and 31's clear no prob. Install was about 8 hours with some help.6" lifts are available as well. you may want to get some ideas from Rick - the webmaster here. Look at his rig. He added a leaf from a Ranger in addition to his SOA conversion for superior axle travel. There are some seriously tricked out trucks here - from hard-core off road to screamers on the road. How much money does your brother have and how passionate is he to keep up with you? :)

6" lift??

6" lifts are available?? Since when? They don't even offer a 6" lift for the 98+ Rangers w/ the SLA setup. This would be big news to me, and a lot of the guys at the 4x4 stores in the area. There are 6" lifts for your rig, which is a ttb front end. The Explorer used the TTB up till 94, and then went to the ****ty, non flexing, seriously expensive to lift SLA setup. From what I've been told body lifts aren't availabvle for his Explorer either, something to do w/ the tcase I've been told. I hope you are right, and can point me in the right direction, because a body lift is all he needs. I'd love to wheel w/ some of ya'll. Are there any members in GA?? Thanks, Coda

body lift's from a 91-94 explorer would work fine for it except for the bumper brackets wich u have to modify and there is no lift for the 95-97 explorers to date but that dons't mean that u can't modify

Superlift will be releasing a lift for the SLA Explorers

I'm not sure, but I've spoken to the local rep, and he told me about it. They had their lift on the 2001 Sport Trac at Sema this year, but who knows what it'll cost. The ranger lift is lke 1300 at least. Coda

National Tire and Wheel advertised the sport trac lift for $1249 in their ad in march's 4 Wheel & Off-Road.

Coda,
Check out the link in my signature. This is a picture of my Exploder. You can look at my mod list, and see that I have 265/75/R16's. GJarrett has a '99 just like mine, except with a 2" body lift and 285's. GJarrett has a writeup on his page ( http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=15264 ) about how to do a 2" or 3" kit. Hope this helps you out! :)
