ok i have a 94 xlt with 57000 miles on it. and about 1000 miles ago my trans started messing with me
it wont shift into second gear by itself
sometimes if i drive really slow with very little gas it will shift by itself but most of the time it wont
the only way i can get it to shift is to run the rpm up to about 2500 and then back off the gas and slowly roll on the gas again and will go ahead and shift
once it goose into second i can drive it like normal and it will shift to third and to over drive with no trouble at all

i have changed the fluid and filter when i changed the filter i looked for any metal shavings in the filter and in the pan and i didnt find any
after that i drove it to a trans shop here where i live and they told me that it needs to be rebuilt and that they would be glad to rebuild it for $1500
i then went to another trans shop about 30 miles from me and they told me the same thing

i just cant see that my trans needs to be rebuilt at 57000 miles

please i need help here

Most likely, it's the 1-2 shift govenor. It's located in the transmission extension housing, and the transfer case needs to be removed to access it. Goto: Dead Link Removed

That's a great site and will tell you all about this problem. It's a common problem with the A4LD.

govenor or linkage

I too think you should have the govenor checked and or serviced.

other areas to check
kick down linkage
vacuum lines hoses, modulator
valve body
intermediate band adjustment

Good Luck

Only 5700 miles???? Was the Ex vacuum packed? With so little use, most likely governor sticking, not a shot tranny...

you think it mite be eletrical i know my truck has been doing some funky stuff like my cruz will stop woking at times and my windows loose power and my ac/heater fan wont come on at times also it seems like my truck is using way to much fuel at times also
does the tps sencer have any thing to do with the trans?

mite be out of ajustment
anyone know anything about the detent

Check the ignition switch for the electrical problems.

I believe that when he refers to the detent cable, he's referring to the cable that goes from the transmission selector on the steering column to the control lever on the transmission.
The TPS sensor only affects the transmission's 3-4 shift and the TCC lockup control. In the A4LD, it doesn't have any effect on the 1-2 or 2-3 shifts. As mentioned by the others, those shifts are controlled by engine vacuum via the vacuum modulator in the transmission.
