I'm signing the paperwork on a 2002 XLT 4wd with the 4.6. It has 28000 miles. Carfax came back clean.

Can anyone recommend an extended warranty plan? I'm a little worried about the transmission and drive train. I've read a lot here about those going bad and I want to make sure I am covered.

thanks

I don't know exactly which one is best - but just to have your transmission and drivetrain covered is huge. the trans and rear axles in your model year are problems and it wouldn't hurt (more likely it'll help) to have a warranty. Good luck

I bought the Ford extended warranty. It cost me $1100 with a $50 deductable. It has paid for itself in the last year. I am the original owner an purchased the coverage at the end of the original plan. Ford works on the vehicle using their parts. You might inquire at your local dealer.
Some of the other plans out there are very restrictive as to what area is covered an who does the work.

I bought the Ford ESP and it has been worth every penny twice over. I recently had to have the rear wheel bearings replaced and nearly the whole rear end as a result. The cost: ESP-$1049, Me-$50. I also to have tranny work done and it covered that.

It is also recognized with no hassle at any dealer.

You will need an extended warranty no doubt about it. The Ford extended warranty is your best option. I would stay away from the aftermarket warranty. I have an aftermarket warranty and my friend has the Ford warranty. He has no problems getting things covered, I get things covered with the aftermarket warranty but it is always a hassle.

I had the ford ESP also, it worked well for most stuff, actually had my brakes replaced under the plan, can't remember what else. 2 or 3 things.
Things like the expensive ballast in the third taillight are NOT covered however.
I think my plan was 1200 or so, with a $100 deductable. I probably broke even with it in the long run. But it helps when you have a 400 repair, that you only pay 100 bucks for.

I purchased it with my truck as well. It only had 6,000 miles on it when I purchased it in '04, it has 48,000 now. It has probably more than paid for itself as I have had work on the differential done (which HAS fixed the whining, contrary to what other owners have said for their vehicles), replaced soleniods in the tranny, replace the steering wheel due to leather defects, and I have a few more things on my list that Ford will HOPEFULLY take care of under the ESP as well.
I say go for it, especially if its an '02, I think the later model 3rd gens have some of the kinks worked out.

I bought the Ford plan as well and I agree it's worth every cent. I would recomend going with the 100k plan. I went with the 75k plan, and even though I'm at 85k with no issues I miss the peace of mind that came with knowing I wouldn't owe more then $50.

I have an aftermarket one..with no decuctable and they pay same day to shop via credit card. But I have to admit lots of places without hessitation will say no thinking its a wait to get paid extended plan. I have used with a dealer for my 4x4 module behind glove box. Costed over 500 bucks at no cost to me. I would love a Ford extended plan.NO HASSLE.

I cut through the middle man (dealership) and went to warrantydirect.com to buy a warranty. saved a few bucks and some hassle.

Extended Warranty Necessary !!!

I'm learning this a little too late. I have a 2002 Sport trac w/ 31,000 miles and in need of a new engine. My worst nightmare ! No more Ford's for me.

I wouldn't just say "no more fords". What is the diag of needing a new engine and why?
if you got 31k miles on it..shouldn't it still be covered under ford? or able to buy a ford esp.
Sorry to hear about that.

sb,
These guys have told you right...get that Ford plan. I just got my 05 a few weeks ago. I had to play "hard to get" with the salesman, but in the end, they offered me a 5 yr 75000 mile coverage for $800 if I would sign the deal. This coverage started the DAY I bought the vehicle that already had 21,000 miles on it. The warranty mileage was an additional 750000 miles, not including the 21 it already had. I had to "walk out" twice, but they threw that in to get the sale! In other words, it was a great bargaining chip for me. The peace of mind is more than worth it's weight in gold.
What I found out that evening is that Ford has "ways" to make any warranty fit your needs.
I have also bought extended warranties...even from a Ford dealer, but they were not companies that were owned by the Ford chain. These policies always caused problems or headaches. Some Ford dealers wouldn't want to honor them, had huge delays getting paid, etc. The extended warranty I got is through a company owned by Ford. That makes a lot of difference.
Good luck with your new purchase. Hope you get your best deal, including warranty!!!

3yr/36,000 miles. My 3 years was up this past August. The mechanics will be tearing down the engine Monday I'll let you know the outcome. Sitting @
red light truck started idling really rough heard a clanking noise under the hood immediately pulled off the road and had it towed. Put it on the diag.
computer and engine froze. Mechanics can't believe this - they are encouraging me to persue Ford because of the 31,000 mileage.

I work for a Ford dealership. Ask to meet with the service manager and to see when the Ford Rep would next be at the dealership. Request to sit down with them. Also, call Ford's Customer Assistance line and ask if there is anything they can do. To help your case out, ANY work/maint records you have, get them together and show them to the Ford Rep and service manager.

One of the things Ford looks for when asked for help is maint records. The more you have, the better your case will be.

It's a shame when we buy a car our biggest concern is an extended warranty, why have the products gotten so bad we have to live with this ? If many are having the same problems the manufacture should be responsible for thier product. IMO that is why the american manufactures are in such trouble, they cut cost and use parts they know will only last the warranty period. What a shame! How can we change it ?
