i think getting into a mild collision would just bend the mounting brakets. if you were in a crash large enough to bend the frame then you'll probly have bigger things to worry about like buying a new truck.
I don't believe a grill guard will create more damage to the frame during an impact. I would think if you hit something hard enough to damage the frame it would have done so with or without the grill guard.. And as chucknet wrote you're going to have bigger things to worry about.
IMO A grill guard is more likely to damage the body (fenders, hood, headlights) during minor collisions. This happened to me. I slid through a stop sign during a snow store and T-boned a car @ 6mph . Because of how the grill guard attached it was able to flex back during the impact which busted my passenger headlight and put a dent into the hood. If I didn't have a grill guard the bumper would have absorbed the impact and not damaged my body & light.
