New CD Changer

hey guys,

i was driving the other day and smelled a bad burning smell. it was the CD changer, now all i get is "bad CD" if i try to play from it. so now i want to get a new one. first, how do i remove it from the armrest? second, any recommendations for a new unit? i'd like to throw a 12 disc changer in there if i can find one that fits. but do i need to get one that is "universal" or will any brand work with the stock ford head unit (JBL premium systerm)?

Just remove the 4 screws that hold the center piece down in the console. This will lift up holding the changer. I would replace it with another Ford CD changer unless you plan on upgrading your HU. My .02 thought.

i would like to replace the HU, but then there's no way to use the stock sub (as far as i know). i don't know if i want to use another Ford changer, the one that just burnt out skipped all the time over small bumps.

OK, I can understand that, plus you could get one to play MP3's too. I slid an Alpine changer down in the console and it worked great. There are kits out there that make the change so you can run an aftermarket changer with the stock HU. You may want to get one of those and make the change. If you wanted to stay stock though, I saw someone in the "for sell forum" selling a stock CD changer and harness that you could probably get a good deal on, but either way, good luck.

thanks a lot BBQ. big help. i think i am going to go with a new changer. i've been looking on Cruthfield's website and they tell me the adapters i would need. which Alpine do you use? by the way, love your X. looks good. i just bought mine so i'm startin slow with the mods.

I'm running the standard Alpine 6 disc changer, the 634 I think or something like that. I didn't get the DVD one, maybe down the road. Thanks for the compliment. Mine is listed somewhere in that thread, don't know where exactly though. sorry
