2013 Ford Explorer XLT
Good morning everyone,

New (used) Explorer owner here. Just purchased a 2013 Ford Explorer XLT with 20K. It's in the Ford Service shop this morning for them to investigate the exhaust fumes entering the vehicle. I followed the thread on the subject and asked them to look at TSD 12.12.4 to see if it applies.
Not a figment of our imagination, the odor can be reproduced whenever the vehicle is accelerated over 3,000 rpm with the rear air operating. I hope this issue gets resolved and doesn't affect my experience on what appears to be an excellent vehicle.
I even tried driving like a "normal human being" the other day and merged onto the highway slowly and only accelerated to 60 mph, never got over 2500 rpm and the odor of exhaust filled the cabin.
I have plans for this vehicle to tow a small water craft for family fun so I hope they can fix the problem. Wife wanted a 7 passenger SUV so this was a top runner in the selection process, at the 30k price for a used vehicle, I want it to be fixed.

Good to meet you all,
George:salute:

No check engine light, just exhaust fumes. The first time they tried to tell me it was other vehicles exhaust on the highway entering our vehicle (even though on recirc), but it always smells the same.
Dealer called later to say the mechanic could not duplicate the odor but they would apply TSD 12.12.4 anyway. Car had to remain overnight while the parts came in, then the sealant did not arrive so two days in the shop so far. Should be done this afternoon. If the odor continues, I'm going to insist the adviser takes a ride with me so he can smell that I'm not making it up.
