I came across this forum looking for the right wire to hook a tach up to my Ranger. I'm familiar with forums, I am a very well known member (probably a bad thing lol) on Powerstroke.org. I'm also the president of a chapter of that forum called Buckeye Power Strokes. I just bought my ranger Tuesday. I needed a beater to use to get to and from work so i keep my nice truck clean (2000 F-250, 4x4, 7.3L diesel). Plus i wanted something that gets better than 15 MPG.

Its a 1989, 4 cylinder (2.3L i think?), 5 speed (not sure what trans that is), 2 wheel drive. It's as base model as it gets. No A/C, no power steering, no radio, nothin. The radio will probably change today though. Just need to find an antenna.

Anyone know which wire to hook my tach to? Its a 4 cylinder and a 5 speed.

Also, how hard is it to fix a speedometer cable on these?

Here is a couple pics of it too.

The stack isn't mounted, its just sittin in the bed, but i thought about hookin it up as a joke so it matches my big truck. lol

You will need to remove the trim from the dash that surrounds your gauge cluster. There are just a few friction clips holding it on. You can use a flat head screwdriver to pry the trim off, being careful not to crack it. . You will see some small screws around the cluster to remove. You have to pull out your gauge cluster far enough to get your hand in back and disconnect it.The clip will test your patience trying to get it off the cluster. Then get under the ranger and disconnect the other end from the transmission(one bolt). Then look for any other clips that might be holding the cable housing on to the ranger. Then you pull it through the grommet hole in your firewall to remove it.
Hope this helps
