I just bought a 96 Explorer and there is a problem with it. The transfer case grinds and chatters like its not engaging. I need to get this home from about 45 minutes away. If I was to take the shift motor off and shift it manually to 2wd and kept the shift motor off would it stay in 2wd? And would I have to manually change it with the engine running in neutral or just change it not running at all? I'm new to this and have read alot on here but I'm still not sure. Thanks alot.

Welcome to the forum. You can switch it manually to 2WD by removing the shift motor and turning the input shaft. It will stay in 2WD.

IIRC, you can do it with the truck off.

Great! Thanks alot. Hopefully if I get it engaged manually and it won't be grinding. Any other reason you can think of why it would be grinding or chattering like that? The guy I was buying it off of had it running and tried shifting it into 2 and 4h but it would only go in 4lo, it would start grinding in the others. My guess is it wasn't engaging fully in the others but then again I know nothing about transfer cases. Just what I've read in all the stickies.

It's probably either a bad shift motor or a messed up xfer case. You'll be able to tell when you take the shift motor off and manually shift the case. If it goes into all modes (2WD, neutral, 4Hi, 4Lo) and works properly in each mode, it's most likely the shift motor. If it's still noisy and klunky, it's probably the xfer case.
