Hello everyone.... I just got a 94 xlt 4 door explorer and I have a few questions to ask. First of all I paid 1000 for it and it has 188,000 miles on it,auto with 3.73 rear end and push button 4wheel drive. the body has no rust or dents and the interior is in great shape also. I got it from a friend who let me take it for a couple of days to drive and I really like the way it runs. My questions are these, At some point in time someone put locking hubs on it and I've been told by different people to always let them locked all the time. I thought when I wasn't in 4 wheel drive I should unlock them, so what should I do? My other question is Did I pay a fair price for it considering the miles on it? Quite a few people have told me explorers are a money pit and I'll be sorry in the long run. Some have even laughed at me and said 1000 was way too much for any car or truck with 188,000 miles on it. So far I love it but I'm wondering if I made a good decision to buy this. Outside of good comments about how good the body and interior are just abot everyone else said I made a bad decision. One other thing, the person who sold it to me had it for sale for about 6 months for 2000 and couldn't sell it at that price. So what does eveyone think? Thanks

You want to unlock the hubs unless you will be needing the 4x4 system.

Explorers are no more a money pit than anything else. The Explorer is normally a very reliable vehicle which can go 200-300k without a problem. Transmissions can be problematic at 100k +, but these days that's pretty normal service life for any vehicles tranny.

If the Explorer were an unreliable money pit it wouldn't be the best selling SUV in the world for the past 16 years.:D
