- 1997 Explorer sport
Hello Everyone. I have been reading many posts for the past hour and cant seem to find anything that sounds like my problem. I purchased a 97 explorer sport 4WD a month ago and was running great. Just had a small snowstorm in my area and used 4wd a cople of times to get moving. One time I was not thinking and switched into 4WD while moving instead of being in netural as the manual says. It didnt seem to cause any problems at that point but yesterday when I started up the vehicle and went to back out of my spot I was slipping on some ice. I placed it in neutral and switched it to 4hi and the put it in reverse. When I hit the gas a loud whine started and I stopped hitting the gas and the noise went away. Hit the gas again and it moved fine and off I went. No probelms for a while and then while driving down the highway doing around 50 the loud whine was back. It is now occurring frequently when I drive on the highway. I am not a real car expert but it seesms to be shifting into gears fine and I checked the trans fluid and its full. When the whining starts I can pumped the gas real fast and it will stop for a bit but eventually will start again. Has anyone experienced anything like this.
