Hi Guys,

My 2000 EB has a noise which appears to be coming from drivers side rear. When I am going slow it sounds like something is rubbing (maybe with the brakes?), and as soon as I press the brake the noise goes away. It seems to go away when I travel on the highway for a little while. I just noticed this the past couple of days.

My rear brake pads and rotors were prob. changed around 92,000 mile. The car now has 145,000. Could it be the brake pad or rotor? Any other ideas?

Thank you,
Mike

Could the noise which I am hearing coming from the rear be the rotor or brake pad? As soon as I touch the brake it goes away.

Could be a warped rotor. I've also seen cases where the e-brake shoe inside the rotor causes a similar noise. Best bet is to jack that side of the vehicle up, take off the wheel and spin the rotor by hand to try to pinpoint the exact area.

ummmm, yeah. 53,000 miles on a set of pads??? I would say you got your money's worth out of them.

While the other comments about a warped rotor, or dragging e-brake shoes are certainly possible, I would suspect that what you are hearing is the wear sensors on the pads. They are meant to make noise when the pads are worn to the point of needing replacement. However, the noise (usually a scraping and/or squealing) will often go away when you apply the brakes.

I would look into this quickly. If it is just worn pads, you'll want to change them before they ruin the rotors. I would say it's a safe bet that your e-brake shoes will probably be close to needing servicing as well.

Also, check your rear wheel bearings/hub assemblies. Jack the rear wheels off the ground (one at a time is fine). Turn the whole wheel/tire by hand and listen for the noise. Also try rocking the wheel back and forth / in and out; from the top and bottom of the tire, and from the side. Check for any play. If the wheel moves a little in just and in/out direction (straight in/out from the middle of truck towards the outside), that's ok. Play in any other direction is not.

Thanks for the replies. I replaced the brake pads today and everything is good now.
