What transmission is in my truck?

I just purchased a 1996 XLT 4.0L 2wd 4door. It has 60k miles and nothing is wrong with it yet, however I have friends who have had serious transmission problems with similar explorers and just want to know what model is in my truck

4R44E i believe. An electronic version of the AL4D. Hope you got service records so you can check how often its been serviced, and whether it's ever had the full fluid flush. Best maintenance tip is to service every 15-30K for best results.

4R55E...the 4R44E was only used in lower powered cars/trucks, but since the Explorer has the 4.0L OHV engine, it got the "beefier" one (there isn't much differences between the two). Welcome to the site!

looks like this weekend will be a fluid/filter change for it.

I have all service records, I actually bought the truck off my sister, and she's a bit neurotic when it comes to servicing her cars. Got the deal of the century on the price too
