Just bought a 99 SOHC explorer XLT, its got 213K on the clock. Exterior appears to be in great condition, not really heavy rust underneath, and I cannot see any residue of anything leaking around the engine compartment.

I picked up a few maintenance items already; fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve, oil and filter.

Problems with the car include a brake light, ABS light, and Check Susp light that are all on on the instrument panel. Sometimes the overdrive light blinks but its been pretty rare.

I dont know if the O/D is even working properly as the revs dont seem to change when I press the button and turn it on and off. Looking for any advice on getting those turned off/fixed.

The muffler has a hole in it and while I'm replacing it looking for suggestions on aftermarket mufflers to throw on and what configuration. Also curious about using seafoam, where the best vacuum hose to use is located. and looking for suggestions on a good parts source online.

I will be looking through the forum using search to pinpoint the problems and hopefully find solutions, but I'd thought I'd throw them in this thread. I have swapped an engine and done an engine rebuild in my old (91) BMW 3 series, so I am mechanically inclined, maybe not with the newer electronics but I'm prepared to get dirty to get some life out of this bad boy.

Thanks

Joe

You'll find a lot of good information here and you are doing the smart thing first (using the search feature). Welcome and good luck.

iirc, the Brake light generally comes on when either the parking brake is engaged, or it's low on brake fluid.
The ABS light can be on due to a bad sensor; which are integrated into the hub/bearing assemblies.
Blinking O/D light means a transmission issue.

Blinking OD light normally causes the trans to go into limp mode which results in hard shifting. Try resetting the codes to see if that resolves the blinking OD.
