I am getting ready to start upgrading my 96 Explorer. I am looking to improve the on-road ride, as off-road in not a priority for me. I am getting new tires shortly. The next mod is in question. should i get new shocks or new sway bars? I'm not trying to built a sports car, just get a nicer ride. Which mod would give me the most noticeable difference? I will do both eventually.

Thanks

Ride Comfort or Handling?

If your priority is handling in the corners, go with some stouter swaybars. If your priority is ride comfort, go with shocks that match the factory specifications. If you don't mind a slightly firmer ride with better handling and control, try the Edelbrocks, or OME shocks. Stay away from the Rancho RSX shocks. They don't provide the sway resistance that the Edelbrocks do.

The Rancho RS9000 shocks are 5-way adjustable. This way you can dial it in, no matter what. Monroe and Rancho both belong to Tenneco now, the Monroe equivalent might be a lot cheaper. The Edelbrocks are actually made by, drum roll please, Gabriel. JC Whitney carries Gabriel. Explorer Express carries a HD 1 1/8" anti-sway bar but the end links are not included. Hellwig has the same but smaller diameter with end links and urethane bushings, part #7648.HTH
