New to the Explorer, but certainly not new to FoMoCo. My Explorer Sport 4.0 has just a little over 96K on the odometer, and the O/D off light began flashing a couple days after I bought it. It shifts fine, as far as I can tell, and the OD will disengage and re-engage when depressing the OD button. The RPMs of the engine respond accordingly. I've had a day when the OD light never came back on, but not of late.

I realize this has been hashed out with many, many others, but they all seem to have had existing shift problems, whereas mine does not (as far as I can tell). I would greatly appreciate any thoughts.

I had this, never fixed it, transmission quit downshifting, lost 5th gear and then my 4.0 ate the head gasket, I V8 swapped, I'm leaning valve body gasket in your case though.

How long before all of this developed? I do suppose it could be electrical as well--correct?

Well my 4.0 was abused by the previous owner I think, and my trans took 11K miles to really show it's colors, although I had no OD when I bought it, but that was the only issue.
