Hello, we just bought a 1999 Explorer Sport 4WD. On the dash is a switch marked "auto","4WD-high", "4wd-Low" I understand "auto" is normal 2WD mode, and also have switched to " 4WD-High" which lights up an indicatator on the the dash display. But when I switch to "4WD-LOW", I get no indicator on the dash display. Why is that? Is it not working correctly? Should I take into the dealer to have them fix something? I am new to this so would appreciate any help you all can give.

Thanks, Dave

Welcome to the site!! Actually, there may be nothing wrong with your truck. To put it in 4 Low, you have to have the truck running, in neutral, and your foot on the brake. Then throw the switch, and it should go into 4 low. Same procedure to get it back out. Good Luck!!

BTW, Auto mode is not full 2wd. In auto mode, the truck sends 80% power to the rear wheels, and 20% to the front (I think I've got my percentages right. Someone correct me if I'm wrong). If it detects slippage in the rear wheels, it starts routing more power to the front. Also, don't use 4wd hi or lo on pavement. It's not good for the truck.

Welcome to the site!

Let us know how everything works out for you and congrats on you new Explorer! Any plans for the X down the road?

JDraper,

Thanks. Maybe I could learn that by reading the owner's manual!! Haven't done that yet (obviuosly).

I will try what you suggested. I have a lot to learn about the new Sport.

hello all,

I DID try switching to 4wd-low as instructed and it worked great.............I was able to creep up my driveway. A challenging slab of inclined concrete, ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh maybe 40 feet long ! !

Ok, it wasn't THAT challenging, but I DID see the 4WD Low indicator come on and I did hear the actuators operating to take it in and out of 4WD Low. Now I know that if I ever need to use it, it is there !

Thanks for keeping me from asking an embarrasing question at the dealer
:)
