Well, this is the 1st post to the forum. We just picked up a "cheap" 1993 Explorer XLT 4 door 5-speed for a around town hauler for the company and are looking to do some upgrades and get it running as good as can be. Will enjoy reading your site.
XL was the base model. XLT had more standard features: alloy wheels instead of steel wheels; A/C and cruise control are standard; carpeted floor mats, etc.
My 1992 XLT has the 5-speed stick. I had to order it to get the manual trans. The salesman told me that only 10% of the Explorers were being mande with sticks. I think they were more common on the 2-door Explorer Sport.
I wish we could still get them with the manual trans!!! Very few SUV's are available with sticks: only the Nissan Xterra and maybe the Jeep Patriot, plus the Subes, (if you can call them SUV'S). Alas, more future shock.
