Well this is my first post, so first off hello everyone.
I was backing out of my driveway today and I heard a really loud noise, and my truck jerked. I got out real quick to look under the hood and everything was alright so I went on my way. I tried to back out of the parking lot where I work a few minutes ago and when I put my vehicle in revers it's pretty much like putting it in neutral. Does anyone have any ideas about what the problem might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's a '99 Explorer, V6. It has 150k miles on it. It doesn't have any leak any fluid. I bought it about 6 months ago and whoever had it before didn't take very good care of it. It had the plugs/wires changed for the first time about 4 months ago, so I seriously doubt that the transmission fluid has ever been changed in there either.

Thanks!

Before you assume tranny, consider that this might very well be a transfer case issue.

Welcome to this forum! It could be a broken shift fork in the transfer case. Do you have manual 1st on the transmission? If not, then it could be the low/reverse band. This band rarely breaks, so start with the transfer case as Glacier suggested. One way to check the band is to insert a long phillips screwdriver into the servo bore to see if the band has any spring action.
